Okay - here goes. You guys are killing me with all of your meters piling up. See what you think of this idea. I had earlier said that I wouldn't try to add my on the water meters, but now I'm thinking I should have a go at it. I think I can safely say that each session can count as 5000 meters. That should be a really low estimate considering we are on the water rowing for almost two hours.

Fortunately, I kept a calendar of all my sessions, so if there are no objections, I will log my water meters. What do you think? After all, I hate being left in the dust! (Or should I say wake?)

Yesterday I got to try sculling in a double! Our coach offered an extra session for those of us who wanted to give it a try. Of course they put us in a very steady and wide boat. I can't imagine rowing in something like the one La Flaca is in! It was great! We paddled around for a little over two hours!!

Later!
Buffle
Buffle - that sounds fine to me - are you erring too much on the side of caution? What do other water rowers think - it is so long since I did any that I would not have a clue about the sort of distances you would do when first learning. It would seem wrong not to log the distances - and there is also the de-motivating effect of having logged fewer metres even though you know you have put in the work. Go for it!

Jenny

OK, I think I finally have this message board thing figured out. I'm new to ducks-in-a-row. I just joined over the weekend, after a frustrating week of missed mileage goals due to sick kids at home. Not wanting to be left in defeat, I came up with new more ambitious goals in order to complete my second million by July 1 (in one year altogether). My first million meters took 5 years to finish.

I never wanted to row a marathon before, but now I just want my meters to add up. So I rowed my first half-marathon Sunday, and my second on Monday. I wish I were better at squeezing in 45 to 60 minutes every day, but failing that, I can still row long on the weekends. I'm planning on 30K next weekend, and my big marathon the following weekend. Right now I'm at 1,880,000. I WILL make it to 2 million or bust!

My big surprise was, it felt great rowing 20k! I started rowing my first 10k's and 60 minute rows last December, which was grueling long, way worse than 30 minutes. But, presto, I kept the pace back to 2:30-2:35, took half hour breaks, and was able to sprint to the finish line and feel exhilerated, and NOT SORE afterwards. Not even sleepy, like the time I tried increasing my speed for 30 minutes at a shot for a few weeks in a row. And Monday, I brought the pace down to 2:25-2:30, and was still able to sprint harder and longer at the end, and still feel great afterwards. If felt just like I went on a good long hike in the mountains; the same well spent but not exhausted feeling. Who would have guessed that longer rows feel better than short rows?

I never wanted to row such long miles before, but now it feels great, and it's one of my few exercise outlets as a mom of young kids. Thanks for you inspiration, y'all!

Margaret, new oldy on the boat.

By rowing 20K 3 days in a row, I made it to 1900km by June 1! I'm stoked. Now it should be easy to finish 2000k by July 1, especially with a 30k this weekend and a marathon in mid-June.

My workout today:
5k easy, building from 2:40 to 2:20 pace
5 minute break
2k all out. I started way stronger than I expected, around 1:55 (I never row that fast anymore!) but before my lungs burst, slowed to around 2:16. My average was 2:08. And usually, I feel fast when I go 2:20 +
The remaining 13k were squeezed in between tending to my kids, pre-snack, post-snack, pre-swim, pre-dinner. But I was determined and got my km in despite interruptions.

After many thwarted goals, it felt great to complete this one. Yeah!

Now, if only I could lose some pounds...surely I burned serious calories.

Margaret

Carole, I am in great respect of your rowing. You are always at the top of the pack on the rankings for our age group. You even row faster than me with a cast on. Now I see you train better too--training on 4 hours of sleep, so far. After accomplish my 60k rowing goal over the weekend, I skipped yesterday for my kids' end-of-school parties, and made up for it by eating extra cookies & ice cream. But it was good!

I'm with you on the gardening thing. My hanging baskets look feeble, but the potatoes, peppers, and squash are off to a good start. The drawback of living in a warmer climate for a gardener is it never ends; winters are nearly as good as summers for growing stuff, so there's less time to daydream about next year...

Enjoy that brisket, and good luck on your garden. I'll try and soak up more ducks-in-a-row enthusiasm to be a more steady rower.

Margaret

My grapevine also is looking good just hope that we have a bit of sun this year .

I am just trying to get some metres in and lose some weight at the moment but I keep getting distracted by Mr Mac's cooking and the odd glass of wine or voddie ..oops... must try harder this weekend......

So - I just finished going back and logging my water meters for the team. I decided to go ahead with the low estimate of 5000 a session.
Today our novice class graduated with a scratch regatta. That was an interesting experience. How does one fly out of their shoes and off the seat without so much as catching a crab?? I guess I'll have to start wearing shoes inside the shoes!
Anyway, I didn't want you to look at the team standings and think I had rowed all those meters today! Now my log is up to date. Too bad I can't count them for the million meter club! I'm going to try to work in more erg time now that the official class time is over.
Keep up the good work everybody!
Ye Old Buffle

No training for another week !! My cough has come back again, and I've got another course of antibiotics so I'll need to take it easy for a while. The Doctor has also given me an exhalation monitor as the chest infection may actually be being triggered by some sort of seasonal asthma type thing. I should know in a couple of weeks time if this is the case or not.

In the meantime I look forward to seeing you all logging metres in my absence - go for it!

Jenny

Hi everybody

I did not do much erging the last time. I'm so fascinated by on water rowing that the erg cannot attract me enough when I have opportunities to do water training. I did some wonderful things. One of them was rowing through the narrow and cosy canals of Utrecht on a hot, nice sunny day. Everybody was enjoying the weather and then our boot with four woman-rowers passed by. We stopped, putted the boat aside and went for a beer. Sweaty, hot and half naked. In the middle off the city with the tiniest, cosiest canals of the Netherlands, crowded with bars and restaurants. This is not training of course, but just enjoying the feeling of being "watched" from all the restaurants at the border of the canals.

And another thing, I did sweeprowing in a competition-eight for the first time of my life! What a wonderful feeling. All that human power in one boat! Wauw!

Yeah, I need to pick-up the erg again, that's better for my condition. Mayby I should take the heart-rate monitor in the boat to make the water rowing more effective and less "recreational"
I never log the "waterkilometers" But there are many meters passing by at the moment.

Ank

If I had the option to be rowing on real water or hiking a mountain, I'd be there! That's the best. I did make it outside for some fun in the sun & saw 4 or 5 different kinds of butterflies all on one walk.

Today I rowed 30k in preparation for next Monday's marathon. I felt more sluggish and less exhilerated than from my 20k's, but I also slightly picked up the pace once I discovered I could safely. Mostly, rowed at 2:25-2:30 per500m, picked it up to 2:20-2:25 for half an hour or so, and down to 2:15-2:20, but just for 1000m or so. I was plenty bushed at the end, didn't need to do any bravado sprint.

Hopefully I'll get in 60 minute rows at least twice this week. Then take one or two days off before rowing my marathon to feel "refreshed." I'm thinking I should stick to 2:30 pace for the whole marathon, unless I have extra energy the last half hour (seems unlikely). On regular days, I'm pushing my 60 minute row pace up to 2:20 from 2:25. For my long rows, I'm drinking half a cup of very dilute OJ every half hour, & getting up to stretch every 60 minutes, per C2 recommendations. Any other advice from those of you who've done this?

Margaret
