By the way, it's currently 323 am in New Zealand so Baz not in kayak just yet. If you go to Speights Coast to Coast website, there will be live coverage. Am really hoping to see finishers!

Keep sending positive thoughts towards New Zealand - looks like some long days for these competitors, and that sloshing through the rivers will definitely take it out of you! I am sure that he is glad to have the run portion behind him.

The support crews are so critical in these events. The competitors have to be met at just the right location by their support crews bringing bikes, etc. Still, I'll bet those brief transition moments are really uplifting to those competing - nothing like having friends and family cheer you on.

And here's the SPOT tracker showing where Baz is:

All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress Thru 2.9.12

Post by Kona2 » February 10th, 2012, 6:39 pm

Welcome to new teammate Rebecca, and welcome back returning teammate Gene B. Wishing you many great rowing sessions and camaraderie with this team. And as to on again off again rowing, we've all been there from time to time - and it can be a seasonal thing for many. It's all good...and we can promise that it's addictive...most of us find that we row more when we are part of a team. :D

Keep looking for competitor number 460 - that's BBB.

I think he's back on the bike

Post by Kona2 » February 10th, 2012, 7:05 pm

If I'm reading the SPOT tracker correctly (love those), it looks like BBB is out of the kayak and onto the bike. If so, that's great work to make it through the 67 K of Waimakiriri River rapids...and now it's 70 K on the bike to the finish. Should know in about ten minutes (next SPOT tracker mapping) whether or not this is so. There was a bit of a lag there between markers 40 and 41 - which makes sense if he was transitioning from kayak to cycle. As noted before, catching up at the right spot with the support crew to offload a kayak and grab a bike...amazing stuff. 70 K ...43 miles. I'd say that's 2.5 hrs on the bike, maybe 3 with a break here or there.

Love the tracker! Looks like he will have a cool partly sunny day to finish according to the reports (max. 18 deg. C)
Looking like an extended break here... nearly an hour and a half. Hope all is well (tho by the looks of his map he must be chasing some sheep around the paddock to keep warm)!

SPOT tracking

Post by Kona2 » February 10th, 2012, 11:43 pm

My guess is that perhaps Janet and Tomo babysat SPOT while BBB was in kayak. SPOT is pretty reliable, but not perfect...although must say that Baz has some very good reception for this satellite tracker. It's 4 PM on Saturday there, and he is closing in on the finish. I say raise your glass and give him a HOOYAH, well done, Baz!

About 9.30pm in Christchurch, and I'm enjoying a Speight's Beer!

I came across the finish line around 5.30pm ish, and I must say it was a welcome sight after a gruelling two-days, but I enjoyed the event greatly.

I'll post more on it later. But K2 was "Spot" on the money in an earlier post. I had the tracker with me on the first cycle this morning, but forgot to transfer to the kayak at transition. My sister thought I made a great time on the final cycle leg of 70 klms, but it was Janet, & TomO in the camper trailer

And what a great job they did looking after me...

And thanks to my Luna-tic mates for all your support and interest!!

Cheers, BBB

Wow Bazz, Awesome accomplishment!

Congratulations!

And in between rowing sessions, there were many teammates checking in to see how things were progressing. Thanks much for providing a virtual link to the race.

Fantastic finish, Baz! You managed 243K in two days...now in rowing terms, that would be a pretty good month for most of us! I particularly liked the two map profiles listed below...neither of which really shows the large river rock strewn river crossings (lots of slippage there I would think), or the spectacular kayaking wahoo moments...or any flat tires one has to repair on bike.
