Every bit as good as Stu's latest IMO, as this is "against type". I know you like to get ahead of time in the early stages, but it must be so tough to see the splits increasing. Nice one.KeithT wrote: ↑May 3rd, 2021, 10:07 amNew FM PB at 2:45:41.1
OK, so not a Stu type row but a 2 minute PB so I am content especially as I was feeling bad on the longer rows leading up to this. I have to say it was a pretty miserable experience. I felt fine in the beginning and went out a little faster than planned but by the time I got to halfway I was already fighting the mental battles. I had no worries of finishing but to get a PB started to seem hard - I had built a "cushion" and knew I could go at like 2:01 the rest of the way and still get a PB though but it seemed hard. Decided to keep just under 2:00 for as long as I could the rest of the way and in the end I never had a split at 2:00 or higher and with 2K to go knew I had a chance to be under a 1:58 pace and ended at 1:57.7. My splits went down some later as I looked away from the monitor for 200 strokes at a time. I can't overstate how much of a battle this was....but it's done and no plans to do again until next year.

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
Thanks Max! For the longer rows it is easier mentally for me to get the "cushion", as I think to myself, I can go slower and still hit goal. For tis one I went quicker the very last 2 sections after all the positive splits. Probably not ideal but I seem to be able to hang on better than chase over a long row.max_ratcliffe wrote: ↑May 4th, 2021, 8:40 amEvery bit as good as Stu's latest IMO, as this is "against type". If I'm totally honest, I'd go so far to say your result could be a bit better than mine Keith. You're not naturally cut out for this, and it suits me far more, so I'm 'expected' (relatively speaking) to produce a faster result.KeithT wrote: ↑May 4th, 2021, 8:52 amThanks Max! It's a natural human response to celebrate the faster result, but when you deconstruct it and really analyse what was possible & expected, it can change the overall opinion. As I've already told you, you should be very proud of your result.

Appreciate that Stu! I still find yours more impressive but we can agree to celebrate each others results like always. Also, I finally got the Chimp Paradox book to read - have read a few others recently about the mind in sports but anxious to get into this one as soon as I finish the one I am reading now.Dangerscouse wrote: ↑May 4th, 2021, 10:31 ammax_ratcliffe wrote: ↑May 4th, 2021, 8:40 amEvery bit as good as Stu's latest IMO, as this is "against type". Great book. Quite a simple premise, but it really does help you to separate out your thoughts and feelings. Talking to your bad inner chimp, and not trying to ignore it or wrestle it, has made a massive difference for me

I often reference the chimp as I understand the premise but will be good to get into the details of it all. I think you read The Champions Mind, I need to finish that one up - can't say it has been that great, I have got more out of other books.Dangerscouse wrote: ↑May 6th, 2021, 2:20 amGreat book. I didn't get much at all from Champions Mind, defo not a recommendation from me. 'The Attributes' by Rich Diviney most defo is a recommendation from me though. Really really enjoyed that, possibly as much as Atomic Habits by James Clear, which is very high praise.
I'm also waiting for Ross Edge Edgeley's 'Art of Resilience' to come out in paperback (not really a fan of hardback), which I think is next week, and that looks great too

I did 18.39 for 5km last week on the Skierg so the goal today was to come in under the 1.50 overall average.
This machine certainly knows how to get your heart rate up.

Very good again Ian. Last 1k is blisteringly fast for the back end of a 5k. I already posted this on the "What did you do today?" thread, but since it is a PB, I will double post...
15,823m in 60:00 min. @ 1:53.7 pace | HR 162 average | 31 SPM (which is the rate that I always seem to row when I am rowing hard)
Today, for the first time, I thought I might someday be able to row 16km in one hour. That is 1:52.5 pace, but unlike on previous attempts, that doesn't seem insane.

Your running background has obviously left you with a great CV system. Keeping the rate high is probably also helping you avoid injury - your chassis won't be as strong as your engine yet.
16k doesn't look far off IMO.
