As a not very flexible guy who is willing to try almost anything to improve his times, do you think there is any merit to doing yoga or anything else that might improve my flexibility? Is flexibility a big advantage beyond a certain point?

Martial arts are worth a look too. Taekwondo is very leg focused, developing both flexibility and powerful kicks/jumps. It has been 15 years since I and my wife did did TKD (we met in class in fact) and I regret that we ever stopped -- my kids are almost old enough that we can do it together so I plan to start again in the next year or so.
40, 6'2", 180# (versus 235# in July 2007)
