Luns

Post by Toothdoc » April 19th, 2008, 8:36 pm

To All Luns,

I gotta tell ya I fell privileged to be a member of the LUNA-TICS. Back at the end of Dec, just before the start of JVC I sent out an email asking if anyone needed rowers. I got back many responses several of which sounded interesting. Then I got this email from Capt. K and a team rowing to the moon and I though these guys just may be goofy enough to be fun. So I signed on.

Being new I felt like I needed to prove I could contribute, I think I have done that. But in the process I have come to admire, respect and identify with the team LUNA-TICS. This is one of the best motivational factors for my work outs.

There are many of you who have pushed, inspired and cajoled I would like to says thanks you. Special thanks to Jan, Darryl, Chris, Kristine, Jane, Lisa and Barb. I'm sure I've left someone out, it was not intentional.

Thanks to all. See you on the 28th.

Dan

Barb, Kick some butt Monday..

PS: Tomorrow at this time I'll be trying to move a 130,000 ton cruise ship, wish me luck.

Pat - I was thinking about you today as I was considering a HM on the C2 log list ... I submit that your "arrggh" was admirably understated!

Dan - er, that's a big IXNAY on the 2,700,000 to finish the year. Hope you have a fabulous cruise. Watch out for pirates on the high seas.

I'm not getting any better at pacing myself on these distance rows. I did a PB on the HM today, but had way too much left at the end. Conversely, when I feel great and get going, I'm dead at 10K. (I'll get better at judging the pace/heart monitor but, at the moment, I'm giving credit for today's result to a couple of shots of limoncello and the pending full moon.)

Best of luck with the Boston Marathon, Barbara. Hooah.

Barbara, you should be celebrating back at your hotel by now. If you log on to read this before coming home, just know that we are all proud of you, however your day went.

Dan, Have a great and well-deserved cruise. Treat yourself! You have had a fantastic rowing "year", and we all know you will be back at it when you return. I, for one, am so glad you decided to join THIS team. It is funny how sharing this bit of our lives here on the forum can make our exercise so much more fun.

I finally got back on the rower yesterday, but internet was down, so did not log my meters until today. The hands and arms are still feeling it a bit from all the work, but the rowing went well enough. Now if I can just make it through the process of building up the calluses again in this final push of the season.

On the whole issue of doing marathon rows, every year I do one, and every year I swear I will never do it again. I do what Dan did: get off to strech, eat a bite, drink a bit, potty break about every 30 minutes. It helps break it up, and especially helps in the last third of the row. I just keep counting down the minutes left until I get to get off again.

Word of caution here: before getting off for a break, record your time and meters, and also the time on the clock. That way, if the computer happens to blank out before you get back to the machine, you can at least start back up where you left off with a reasonable degree of certainty. On the half and full marathon times, you must keep the clock running during your breaks, so it is important to note the clock time to maintain integrity in your recording if you do happen to loose computer readout (it has happened to me before.)

Also, with the model C at least, I simply do a scroll through on the monitor to keep it registering. I do not have to actually pull the chain. That being said, be careful not to press the wrong button, and turn your monitor off by accident (this too has happened to me before.)

My monitor only holds data for 2 minutes. The best improvement C2 could do on the monitors, in my opinion, is to set them to hold current data for 30 minutes before turning off. I would gladly give up a little battery life in exchange for the reduction of stress and frustration that few minutes deals out. All it takes is a child needing attention or a little longer than expected potty break, and once again I am kicking myself for neglecting to write down the numbers before getting off.

And Dan is absolutely right about having a selection of movies, etc. to watch. I like to have some variety waiting because sometimes I decide after getting going that the movie I have on is just not doing it for me right then, so I get off and switch it to something else.

The mug IS very cool. I'm not sure if they give them out every year or not. I have only ever received one mug (and the kids have not broken it yet.) I have never seen a company that treats it's customers as well as C2 does. Who else gives out the free stuff like they do, year after year, with no upsale strings attached? Other companies give employees perks, but C2 is in a class by itself for their committment to their customers.

thanks..however one of the unique aspects of the boston marathon is that it takes place tomorrow on a monday...patriots day...a holiday in massachusetts and maine, that was origanally part of massachusetts....did have the women's olympic marathon trials today....and with the sox, celtics, and bruins all playing it's a great time to be a boston sports fan.....

btw...do you have any marathons coming up

also thanks to you and dan for the marathon tips....quick question...when i row at the y the timer stops when i take a break....would using my sports watch to time a half...not close to rowing a whole...be okay.....

Barbara, Oops...I figured the marathon would be on Sunday. Well, we will be cheering you on tomorrow then. I just made my marathon plans for the year and am going to shoot for one Sept. 21st in Montana and the Spokane, WA marathon on Oct. 12 - the same two I did last year (both close to home, so cheap to go to.)

On the timer, I believe if you preset the meters for the marathon distance the timer will continue to run during breaks. This will have you counting down the meters to go, but I think you will also have the option to change the setting to count up. Give it a try, anyways.

For those following my non-1/2 Marathon, here is my reply from C2. I feel better....

Wow Pat thanks you for finding that. Our web team put it up wrong. We will defiantly grant you the 1/2 marathon certificate. I am running down to the office of our web person and get her to fix it ASAP. Thanks again! - Greg

They also listed the meters for the Full marathon incorrectly, but all will be fixed.

Barbara, I'm watching for you on WBZ. The weather is great! Good luck!

Pat,

Great follow up to what must have been a somewhat embarrassing moment for C2! I will also put you on the Half Marathon finish list!

Barbara has 5K to go - pace is a little slower - she's hanging in there!

The weather at the start of the marathon today was perfect....54. But it has now risen to 75...not good for Barbara. Just to finish is such an accomplishment in itself! I'm proud of her!!!
