Rowing in a Double

No, ergs don't yet float, but some of us do, and here's where you get to discuss that other form of rowing.

Rowing in a Double

Post by Greg3 » April 13th, 2008, 12:09 pm

I am 16 and recently started rowing with my friend in a double. I am tall and in good shape from lifting, and he is in good shape from wrestling. However, we are always behind the other boats in practice. This is because we are doing something wrong with the form probably, because we are also behind the other novices. What is some advice that anyone has that will help us row faster? Our first race is in 2 weeks and I would like to do well. Also, my back always feels really stiff when I am rowing. Does that mean I am doing something wrong?

your back could be feeling stiff for several reasons

1) lack of flexibility in the hamstrings
2) bad posture, get on an ergo and stick a mirro next to it or get someone to video you on a mobile phone. If you have a big curve in your back then sit upand straighten it out
3) just rowing as a new sport and your lower back may not be strong enough to support you, this will build up in time

going faster

well being able to life big weights and being able to pull a good ergo well that is all well and good however these have to be looked at as a cross training tool for the actually sport of rowing or sculling. As doing lots of ergos and lifting lots of weights will make you very strong and good on the ergo but this doesnt mean you will move a boat well

go out and do lots of technical work i.e. square blading, rowing in singles i.e. one hold the boat level and the other rows / then swap. front stop dips, legs only paddling.

also good idea to practice some starts, as if it is a short race if u get dumped off the start your finished

just get loads of miles down, and if you can get a coach to look at you.

good luck, i apologse for any spelling mistakes/grammar issues but i type faster then i think

thanks, that was helpful. The back stiffness is probably from tight hamstrings, because I have extremely tight hamstrings
