2k Trifecta

Post by cooldude_crew » March 13th, 2008, 9:11 pm

I have been out of rowing for the past couple of months for wrestling. In my second week back we had our first 2k test. On the 5th time erging I got a 7:05.1, hopefully it is just the lack of erging that is hurting me.

This Sunday, I am planning on participating in the USRowing Junior ID camp. I don't expect to raise any eyebrows, though that would be nice :D . I just want to get one last erg score in before our team's erg race next Saturday.

My goal is to be in the 6:45 range by the erg race next Saturday. Is this still possible? I rowed all year last year before wrestling, but this year I am having trouble getting into the rhythm of erging. Is this just erging pains?

Sorry about the messy post, I needed to write it fast.

Based on what you said, 6:45 so soon seems very (foolishly) ambitious. It's 20 seconds faster than your very recent attempt and 15 seconds faster than your personal best. By your own admission have not been doing a lot of focused training you don't feel the rhythm right now. Why would you think you would be so much faster? Personally I'd set a slightly more reasonable goal. Shoot for a pace to beat your old PB and then if there is any fuel left in the tank with 400M to go - go for it. Sure beats hitting the wall with 800 meters to go.
If you don't try, you will never know how bad you suck.

Hard to say man. If you pulled a 7:05 that quickly, then you are going to break your pr (6:59 according to your signature) pretty soon. How far under that pr is tough to predict. How have your ergs been going so far? Do they reflect an ability to go 6:45 as they will be your best source of info. Off the top of my head, I would say try for a 6:55 this weekend (of course, if you have the energy in the second half, speed up). That's the half way point between where you are and where you want to be. It will give you a good feel for what is a reasonable goal next weekend.

Just keep in mind though, if you don't hit the goal it is likely because you haven't had a great deal of sport specific training over the winter. Be patient as the fitness is there and the numbers will come as the season builds. If you do hit the goal, just remember that it means you probably have more in you and to keep pushing through the season.

Well today we did 500m sprints and it felt great to have some of the rhythm back. We only got in 3, becasue of time restraints, and a 300m piece.

1st 1:35.5
2nd 1:35.1
3rd 1:35.8
300m 53.3sec

I probably could of gotten lower, but I was expecting us to at least 7.

I would probably agree that a 6:45 by next weekend is dreaming a bit, but I would like to have that erg time, as we get into the big on-water regattas.

Thanks for the replies

6k = 26 minutes

Is that a misprint? If you are under 7 minutes on your 2k I would assume you should at least be in the 22:30's

While you are at it, check out his 5k and 10k, 20:28.1 and 39:24.3.

Yea I don't know when that 6k took place probably when I first got the erg. The 5k is also from a couple years ago. The most recent is the 10k which I did last April.

I would like to do more metered pieces, but with time restraints and numer of ergs we often do timed pieces, usually 20-30mins.

They went OK. He told us to do the first 4 500m at 2k Pace and the Last 2 all out with 4min centers (About a 2:15 Break)

1st: 1:40
2nd 1:41
3rd 1:42
4th 1:41
5th 1:40
6th 1:39

After this workout I feel pretty good on getting close to a 6:45 this weekend.

It was great to finally be rowing on the water again.

I don't think I will make the Junior team (need to be near a 6:10), but it was a good experience.

That's different than what they made me and the others do at the ID camp in Winter Park. They had us do 4 500m at a pace you can hold sub-2k and the last two go balls to the walls. Tons of fun.

2k Race

Today we had our 2k race. I was put into the slower heat because of my previous 2k time. 1st in Heat. 4th or 5th overall

6:51 2k time

Kept a 1:43 the entire time with a little sprint. By the end of the race was 90m in front, but after the race I felt pretty good, way too much energy.

My goal of breaking 6:45 2k looks like it will happen right when we need it most on the water.

Very nice. At least you know next time you can empty the tank a bit more.
