NewGrips

Post by Toothdoc » March 12th, 2008, 9:24 pm

Pat & Jan,

Just finished my 1st 10k with my new NewGrips. They felt very good; without trying I was rowing 500/splints about 10 sec. faster than normal. Not sure if it's the gloves or the fact I was hungover(Attended a Black Tie 80th B-day party last night for a great gal and about a 1000 of her closest friends).

Pat great job on the stats and attachments.

Jan welcome back. Hope you had fun. Base-a-ball been berry berry good to me and fun too. Hate to tell ya we are all Yankee fans at our house.

Darryl,

What gives? Are you trying to run away and hide from the rest of us mortals?

Well...I am sorry to say that I will not be rowing any more 10k's for a while. Went the the physical therapist yesterday and he has put the brakes on that. Said I must row only til I feel the pull in my neck. I am moving the damper back down to 8 now but it seems to take longer to get the meters in and I was only able to muster 5k today. I will go 3 times a week until he pulls my neck back into some semblance of order.

I also congratulate Jane and welcome Darryl!!!

I swear I'm not up to anything Dan! There's just a little extra incentive in rowing for me right now. I am still in the fitness program through my former employer (MN DNR). I signed up in Feb 2005 for fitness through canoeing, kayaking, and rowing and have been recording my miles canoeing and on the Concept II since. I turn in my miles on a quarterly basis and this happens again March 31. Right now I have about 150 miles to go for the silver metal. When I returned from Florida, I decided to go for it and see if I can earn silver this quarter. That will be a sweet 4000 miles since I signed up. It's been a long time coming. Then I only have 4000 more miles to go for gold! We will probably be to the moon by the time I earn that... Darryl B

Dan C - I like your new picture!

Jan - the million is in sight!

Joseph welcome, hanging out in the team room will certainly give you lots of tips.

As for grips and holding the erg handle, I first had to learn not to try to feather. Funny, you struggle to learn the technique and then you have to unlearn it. I hold the handle in my fingers with my thumb either free or just touching the handle. I don't grip it at all, just a loose hold. no caluses or (worse) blisters yet! seems to work for me.

I have added about 4" of foam to the seat - I tried one 2" block, not enough added a 2nd layer. I've heard of gel seat pads, but I had the foam, so I used it.

Gina

PS I jumped from page 35 to page 33 of the 1500 meter board, wow  !

My NewGrips came in the mail today (speedy delivery!), so I also tried them. They felt good right away ... I didn't go faster, but I had an audio book due back tomorrow, so went longer than planned, to get it finished ... still felt good, and it sure beats wrapping my fingers.

Darryl,

Your goals are lofty and worthy. Congrats on nearing the Silver milestone and just think all those meter will count toward NARC starting Sat. Keep your oars wet.

Lisa,

Have you been rowing with the damper set on 10? If so, that may be a big part of the neck pain. All the speed freaks and long distance rowers I know row with a damper setting of 3-5. I personally have settled on 4. I tried 10 once just see what it was like and thought I'd ruptured my spine. There was way to much pressure on my back. One of the main reasons I row is because of back problems. That said rowing will hurt your back or neck without proper posture, technique and damper setting. Lower that damper some more you'll like. And don't worry about a few extra minutes.

Hope this helps.

Gina,

Thanks. The picture was taken at Cape Neddick LIght, Maine. It is a beautiful Light House wish I could have included more in the picture. It really is postcard material.

congrats on the move up.
