Nice new home Pat - well done! Fun and very reinforcing to keep the communication with our team(s).
February and March look like good opportunities to get in some meters. For those of us 'up North" the weather is crap - the sky is grey, the boats are in storage - we need goals to survive the doldrums!

Thanks everyone for the thoughts on distance progressions for the half and full marathons. I am slowly moving towards the half distance...I would not have thought about the sports tape for fingers!
Nice accomplishments Bill on your events - and heading toward your goal of 1MM by March. And for you dragon boaters out there (and everyone else), it's Chinese New Year: Year of the Rat.
As long as the rats don't leave our virtual boats.....

- I liked the Year of the Rat Graphic. I'll definitely stay with our virtual fleet - not only is is it great fun, it complements on-water training - and I sort of got the bug to compete in both sports. This weekend, I'll either do a Half or Full Marathon (leaning toward the Full) to push up those meters - so I'll let you know how it goes. As far as your goals go, I think that if you can comfortably do a 10-15k- the half should be no problem - particularly if you build up to a 10k with some pace on it, after that I think its its all about headwork (keeping a relaxed focus), hitting a pace you can manage, and keeping good form - and...some good tunes on the old I-pod or stereo doesn't hurt either! For high-intensity workouts I find I definitely prefer music to TV but for really long rows a little Football or Basketball is ometimes the choice for fighting boredom - movies take too much attention away from the rowing, where I can "watch" sports without really engaging my brain. Also hydrate well all the time - days before an event - you really can't row and drink if you're pushing for time, if not, take a pause to drink, but you still have to be well hydrated before - you can't make up inadequate hydration during a row. Re: fingers - one of the things I've found helpful is not to wrap the thumbs around (the bottom of) the grip - using the other fingers to hold the grip also means you don't have to hold too tight (biomechanics takes care of that) - I have developed some pretty good calluses in the process - once you get there, no problem but you won't get there with tape. Row Long - Row strong!

It was a great weekend for rowing! New PB for the 10k Saturday. Completed my first Marathon today. Pretty decent 10k for an old guy: av 2:03.4/500 split, pretty slow Marathon: av 2:19.9/500 split - played it conservatively. Had energy left over at the end... but, speaking of the 'end'...as I predicted, one's bottom that really takes a beating on the Marathon! I stayed on the machine - drank lots during the row - varying the pace and effort helps reduce fatigue. It was really cold and windy in Pittsburgh today - ironically, we lost power this afternoon so both the TV and Stereo went out (as well as my Row Pro on the Laptop (so happy for the C2Log Card!!!) - made for sort of a sensory-deprivation row.
