The year-round team and the JVC team had only 5 or 6 members on it when we began recruiting for this year's challenge (the teams both had identical membership).
Now the year-round team is up to 52 members, and the JVC team has a whopping 75 members on it. Some people are on another year-round team which does not participate in the JVC, so they joined us for the JVC only. Some people have also decided to leave their old year-round team and move over to the LUNA-TICS year-round because we are such a fun bunch to be around!

All this talk about marathons...yikes. Please advise:
I do remember that one team member did row a half marathon (I think) in the middle of the challenge - and for the first time. I am interested in what progression people are taking in their rowing distances to get to half, or even full marathon rows. I have read the Concept3 thoughts on being able to row a few 10000 meter days before attempting longer distances, etc., but that didn't really tell me about what the experience felt like.
How do / did you go about it - and how do you keep it from being something that says "I'll never do THAT again" ?
Kona2 (who has not quite sworn never to do this marathon thing...since saying never inevitably leads to actually doing the thing)

I, personally, have yet to do a full marathon.I have done my share of half marathons.I think it would merit training somewhat like that of a runner.taking small distances and adding each time..building on endurance but I have not done it so I am no expert.I would probably do maybe 2 half marathons in a day..split but then again it depends on how I feel in March.

Well, as sort of an endurance crazy....my thought is that, once you can comfortably get past a half marathon, your pretty much good to go for a full one. I'll test that theory on my C2 soon; my current max has been around 30k. I was one of the crazies on Timbuk2 who did a half marathon during JVC. I also instigated a 50k with my team on the Dragon Boat this fall, which I suspect is ultimately much harder than a C2 marathon would be (something about you an your 19 crew mates moving a 3,800+ pound boat and ending the event on pyramids after 4+ hours of paddling. Ironically, the greatest challenge, it seems to me, is at the "ends" - so to speak..the head and the bottom! Probably pretty much the same deal on the C2. We'll see soon enough.

Kristine - I remember the Los Gatos HS teams just getting started my senior year at SCU. I'm glad to know that rowing is still going strong there. I was one of the first 3 women graduates to row all 4 years. Back then women could only race 1000 meters, no one thought we could survive 2,000. Of course, it was never a race but a sprint the whole way.
Andrea - congrats on the million.
I tried a 1/4 marathon yesterday, didn't die, that's a good sign!

I guess the quote came out incorrectly, as the million reference was Chris' quote. Hence my congratulations to her . I have to paddle some more to reach the million, even if I find my old lost miles...acrewer wrote:Kristine - I remember the Los Gatos HS teams just getting started my senior year at SCU.
