Good luck to those of you rowing in the CIRC, Monster Erg, etc tomorrow. Let us know how you do.

Keep on rowin', eh.

February's Cross Team Challenge is 7777m.
There is an online row set up for 1PM Sunday the 3rd for those who aren't doing the Canadian 2k races tomorrow. Join me, any pace is fine.

Send me a PM and I'll try to arrange times to suit.

Cheers,

Kirk kindly reminded me that you guys might like to know what happened yesterday at the CIRC in Toronto.

My plan was 1:38s and see where everyone else was and give it all in the last 200m. Sounds good.

Last Monday I had finished training, had a shower and as I was pulling on a T-shirt, my lower back started to quickly tense up.

I went to the Chiropractor the next evening and she said it was Sacroiliac joint inflammation. It felt much better after the session and I was due back on Friday anyway so she suggested ice packs, ibuprofen and no rowing!

I took 3 days off, saw her on Friday by which time I was about 75% good again. More ice, ibuprofen and only light rowing.

I felt good this morning maybe 90-95%.

Race time. I get on the erg, adjust the footplates and the DF. I knocked it down to 117 pulled for 30 seconds and waited. They had just announced "1 minute to start" and I decided I would tie the laces on my fancy blue shoes a little tighter. Well I'm just about half way through my second lace when I hear "sit ready" very closely followed by "attention" and my hands are still finishing my laces! At the same time as I hear the "row" command I grab the handle and start pulling.

I got my 5 fast strokes in and settled down to 1:34s!!!!! 250 in I'm not even in the lead! I'm 3rd 15m back. What the hell is happening? Whatever he's pulling he can't possibly sustain it. Can he?

500 in and I'm still 3rd, 12m back but still pulling 1:34s. "OK slow down" I tell myself. I can't keep this up so I'm sure he can't. 1:37s now. Feels good now but the gap is still 10m but I'm second and we're through 1K. I decide to go down to 1:39 just to save something for the end. I slow down but I gain on the leader. This is good, he's dying! Pick it up at 500 to go. 1:38s again and now I'm in the lead. 1m, 2m, 5m then 10m and still only at 1:38s.

200 to go. Go for home. Rate up to 35 and pace down to 1:35. Still feeling good but don't have any more to give.

Its over!

6:30.3

Not a PB but considering the crappy start and the total dismissal of the plan, a good result.

A good first race with many lessons learnt.

My race didn't go nearly so well as Dave's.

I felt great on Friday. And had high hopes for Sunday's racing, but on Saturday morning I woke up with a bit of a sore throat and major congestion in my chest. I did what I could with fluids and vitamin C and was hoping that I would start feeling better through the day, but it was not happening. Sunday morning dawned with me feeling like a total bag of crap. I couldn't take a full breath without coughing, and I just was not getting the air I needed at all.

I went down to York anyway and got on that erg! I started out much to fast, and couldn't maintain the rate at all. I just flat couldn't breath at all. I slowed down to a 2:00 pace and tried to kick it back up for the last 250, but I still got creamed by everyone who finished.

I ended up with a final time of 07:45.0 in 14th place, but there were nineteen people that were registered for that event, so I guess the DNF's just didn't make it on to the list. . .

My second race was not great either. I entered in the Men's recreational event (1K), and by the time 11:30 rolled around, I could barely manage any sort of breath at all without coughing let alone the full lung capacity that would need for a race.

Again, I started with too fast a pace, and fell right off at around 750 meters to go. I was really dying by the last 250 meters, but finished it up in a time of 3:39.2.

So, not even close to the medals, but I did make it to the event, and I didn't handle down. And both times were personal bests. I just think I could have done better with lungs that were in working condition.

Dave, I was standing behind a friend who was rowing a few ergs over from you. I couldn't help but notice before the race that you seemed particularly focused on your shoes  Congrats on a good result and a race rowed well.

Hi Cynthia,
Thanks. It turned out well in the end. It doesn't normally take me a minute to tie my laces, so the starter must have been a bit quick after the minute to go warning! B)
I'm not even sure all the flywheels could have stopped after we all adjusted our DFs it was that quick.

Thanks for the race accounts guys, very much appreciated!

Congratulations on your win Dave it was good that you got back into your game plan after your brief entanglement at the start.

Congratulations on your PB's Charles and for achieving your other goal of not finishing last. You didn't handle down!

Cheers,

Congrats to my fellow Eh! Team rowers! We have reason to be proud!

I am closing my Brain Angles Creations store as I am unhappy with my cafepress.com experience.

So, here's a link to a 10" x 10" .png file of 'The Eh! Team' logo I designed. Feel free to download and print on T-shirts etc. for yourself. Permission is for personal use only - no sales please.

Well done at the CIRC hosers. You can pat yourselves on the back. Doing a 2k like that can be hard.

Linda and I are just getting back on the ergs after a couple of weeks travelling and intermittent erging.

I see the Eh!Team is continuing to click along and we have sent our international trireme to Hans Island to have some beer and settle our dispute with the Dane's

I heard that when Bill Gates read about the "Google War" over Hans Island (referenced in Jim's link above), he misinterpreted it as a threat to Microsoft's dominance, and promptly began proceedings to buy the island.
