The 2008 Team Moto Madmen and Women
Knocked out my first 1/2 marathon today. Stayed fairly conservative and finished in 01:38.10 . Did my last (2) 500 meters at sub 1:50 pace
7 Weeks out now from rotator cuff surgery and I think this rower has played a key role in my recovery and range of movement. My doctor can't believe how quick I've bounced back at 48 years old.
I guess the Marathon would be next

Thanks, LTR! I have to admit that I was quite shocked myself. I don't remember at what point in the row I looked at the monitor but I saw that I was on a 1:30-something pace so I just hammered it home. It was actually supposed to be the first row of my five-interval block but, as you can imagine, I stopped after that one.LiteTruckRider wrote:Wow, 6.4 seconds sounds like a lot. Congrats, Steve!

The husband says " I know what you have to do... take some tissue paper, rub it between your breasts 2-3 times a day, you'll see!"
Wife " what? How is that going to make them bigger?"
Husband " Well, it worked for your ass ! "

It must be from all that long distance stuff you started doing.C3H6O3 wrote:Woo hoo! New personal best today in the 1x500m of 1:38.2 (-6.4 seconds). No joke
Also upped my 7-stroke average a few points to 372W (from 369W). Average watts over the 500m was 370W or 99% of my 7-stroke average.

LOL. Can you believe I've only rowed one true marathon? Two halfs in a day don't count.LiteTruckRider wrote: Congratulate yourself for rowing all those marathons, Sean! Frankly, I think Jennifer should send you a couple of extra mugs.
Well seeing as how they call it TEAM challenge, I would imagine that it is the total. If they go by average, then I don't think anybody is going to top the Breast Cancer Awareness **cough** Team.BTW, does anyone know what determines team ranking for the VTC? Is it the total meters rowed by a team, or the average meters per member?

The power over time curve is not linear so yeah 6.4 seconds is a hell of an improvement!LiteTruckRider wrote: Wow, 6.4 seconds sounds like a lot.
If I'm not mistaken the power required is exponential. It takes more than double the power to cut your time in half!
Way to go Steve! That's giving 'er!

Dude, that's an awesome time! My PB sofar is 1:33:20. That was after I rowed my marathon earlier the same day so I know I can do better. I'll try for better times once this challenge is over.yamadog wrote:Knocked out my first 1/2 marathon today. Stayed fairly conservative and finished in 01:38.10 . Actually, I attribute my improved anaerobic POWER (performance in the 500m sprint) to the fact that I've returned to serious strength training in the last two weeks. I do know that I was generating WAY more power on every stroke (i.e. I was pulling harder; legs and arms). That, and I think my technique has improved. The 1/2's may have played a part in that, I'll admit.
One thing I did notice was that my anaerobic CAPACITY, as demonstrated by my 500m intervals, is way down. After a good rest, I tried to do some 500m blocks and all I could manage was 2 rows before I was toast.
Given the results of the last few weeks (i.e. pretty fair carry-over from "short to long", poor to none from "long to short"), I am further convinced of the superiority of high-intensity training (with respect to specificity, of course).
We'll have to continue this discussion later as I am off to dinner. Might even celebrate with a margarita or two.

After my shoulder grows back I think I could break into the high 1:20 range. The C2's are definitely addictive. I think my pursuit for the ultimate cross training device is over. Can't wait to try interval training.
I still think Sean must have been blessed with a great gene pool

Bingo. If you didn't have the right parents, it doesn't matter how hard you train, you're never going to be an elite athlete. Of course this doesn't mean you can't be good or improve your health and fitness, but the chances of having a gold medal swinging from your neck is slim.
I blame my parents everyday.

Yeah, I averaged 29% more watts over that distance this time (370W) versus last time (287W). Strokes per minute were the same at 35.
Thanks, Wayne!yamadog wrote:Congrats on the 500m time. Only bad thing about a new PB is it always leaves you thinking "How do I improve on this"
That's the question isn't it? As I experienced such little drop-off from my 7-stroke average over this distance (370W/372W or 1%), I imagine the only way I can improve is to generate a higher 7-stroke average. So, how do I become more powerful? There is some research looking at a 5-stroke average so I will test that soon as well.
