LUNA-TICS Astro-rower-naut Team Room - Hangin' Out Together
Excused Absence?
I just received a jury summons in today's mail ... do y'all think that "sorry, I'm in the middle of rowing to the Moon" would be permitted as an excused absence?

Hello Luna-Tics
I should introduce myself first. I use DuluthMoose as my username in cyberspace for the internet forums I frequent. Darryl Bathel is my real name.
I've had my model D rower for 3 years and I am approaching the 5 million meter mark. I got interested in a Concept II rower from recommendations from other canoe paddlers on paddling.net. Now I row almost daily in winter, but cut back to only 2 or 3 times a week during the open water season when I am frequently out in one of my long, sleek, fast canoes cruising on one of the many lakes near me. I also enjoy Nordic skiing in winter and the snow in Duluth is fantastic this year. But I guess it's also costing me meters!
I find vet wrap (horse leg wrap) to be the best thing for me to prevent blisters on my hands when rowing. Get it for about $2 a roll at your farm supply store. I use pink on the left hand and green on the right. Two alternating wraps around the palm with fingers slightly spread and then around the base of the thumb (not real tight wraps); then finish off with another wrap around the palm. These "gloves" lasts me about a month and then I make new ones.
Go Luna-Tics.
And remember we're all in this together!!! (some wisdom from Red Green)

No....we don't blackball anyone....even when they don't row for awhile. Believe it or not, before this challenge started the LUNA-TICS only had 3-4 members. Almost everyone is new to the team and it is great! This JVC team is up to 65 members now, and the year-round team has 41.
By the way, the number you see next to the average meters rowed on the team standings page is the number of rowers on our team who have entered meters (we have 3 members who have not entered any meters yet- not to worry; sometimes people enter a weeks worth or more at a time.)
And congratulations on 36 years of marriage, Tom. That is great! Keith and I have just celebrated 16 years of marriage.
Now I just finished my row for the day, logged my meters, and am going to go shopping tomorrow for a thicker seat pad for the rower (the computer mouse pad I am using just isn't cutting it at the moment ) Anyway, tomorrow is a day of rest for the whole body, and I'm needing it right about now.

Go team luna-tics!
Hello there! I've joined the team both for the JVC and the year-round team.
My name's Kelly, and I'm 33. I currently live in southeastern WI. I discovered the C2 rower through my local CrossFit affiliate (CF Milwaukee), and although I'm not currently attending CF workouts, I did buy myself a C2 rower, and that's my primary exercise now.
It's a delight to be able to crawl out of bed at oh-dark-thirty, throw on exercise gear, and stumble into the next room to wake up with some great music and the rower.
I haven't rowed many meters, but I am looking forward to getting there. To the moon (and back)!

Differences -Joining for the challenge and joining full-time
I am not really sure WHY C2 has us form separate challenge teams, but that is how it is set up. Here is the difference, as I see it:
When you designate a team affiliation in your C2 profile, you are saying that, year-round, you are a part of that team. All your logged meters will accumulate on the team meters counter as well as on your own personal file. The meter counters that show up on the team pages next to your name start over again at zero at the start of every rowing season, but your personal log book keeps a running total for life. But also, at the start of every new rowing season your log book will archive the completed season, and will only show the current season on the recording page. You can access the archived seasons by using the top tab links.)
There are lots of school and University teams that do not train on indoor rowers year-round, so might not be "in session" during a C2 challenge. I think this is the main reason why there are separate challenge teams (also, some year-round teams do not want to compete in a scheduled challenge race because it does not fit with their team training goals for on-water rowing.) A person on a certain year-round team can also join a challenge team without changing their year-round team affiliation. The challenge team only accumulates meters as a team for the duration of the challenge.
There are several team challenges that C2 has throughout the year. Anyone who is on the LUNA-TICS challenge team right now will get an email from me the next time there is a team challenge going on. If you want to stay on LUNA-TICS for the challenge you do not need to "join" it again- the team list can be enrolled as a team anytime I, as the captain, feel like exercising my power over all of you (Bwaaaahaaahaaahaaa!)
You don't have to feel obligated to row any extra meters during the challenge period, but it is often a great motivator. Also, if you want to jump ship (keep in mind that it is going to be quite difficult to "swim" your way back to earth from space) and try out another team for the challenge, you can leave the challenge team by clicking the link on your screen for that purpose (that will not make you leave the affiliated team- you must edit your profile to change your year-round team status.)
In the past LUNA-TICS has not had a Team Room on the forum. I don't know what happens to this particular thread once the JVC is done. It might be deleted. If that happens, I will try to set up a Team Room again for year-round use, but if that is not possible, I will simply set up a new Team Room everytime we do a new challenge. At least that way we can have some fun together as a team throughout the year.
Hope this helps. Now time to go row!

padding issues
Kristine, I know you were looking for seat padding. Concept2 says this in their marathon training suggestions: Seat: We find that variety is the key for seat comfort on long rows. Have a seat pad handy (call us for a free pad - sorry, US and Canada only) and several sheets of "bubble wrap". Bubble wrap works great for us!
I have built up up my own internal padding over the years, so do not have this issue.javascript:emoticon('')

Seat Challenge
For those of you who rowed with a team, you know about seat challenges. Basically, two boats race against each other then one person from each boat switches, and you race again. The coach is looking to see if the people switching make a difference.
I propose a seat challenge with Free Spirits, since they are about the same size team as us. Sort the team list by team and then individuals. Choose someone on their team who has more meters than you right now and go and row more than them. It helps to pick someone with a meter number above our team average. the next time yo row, make sure you are still ahead of them an set you sights on someone higher up the ladder.

Go Luna-Tics!
Everyone's rowing an AMAZING amount of meters in this virtual challenge. Team Canada is just a bit ahead of us....think we can catch them this week? Must be feeling competitive today !
Re: Seat Challenge
For a few days I am setting my sights on shoveling snow off the driveway and sidewalk!
After a week the team has rowed roughly 3,165 km. The good news is that we have easily cleared the earth's atmosphere. The bad news is that we are not even a tenth of the way to the geostationary satellites much less the moon.
If we count all the teams we are nearly a fifth of the way to the moon--not bad! If we all pick up the pace a little, reaching the moon is possible. Getting back will have to wait until next month.

Big,
That's a great picture! Are you going to keep us posted, and alter the picture to show the rower making progress? One of the team mates suggested that instead of returning home after hitting the moon, we ought to go for the next space body in line (linearly, not actually, since everything keeps moving and we don't know how long it will take us to "get there.") I propose we head away from the sun, rather than towards it, as it gives us room to go farther. This could take a lifetime, after all.
