handicaps age/gender

Post by douglashaller » September 25th, 2007, 9:19 am

Is there any handicap system to "equalize" times across different ages genders?

My local YMCA has a group using the indoor rowers...we have about 35 posting in the Fall rowing challenge.... 95% of these are new to the rowing machine, and most have never been in a rowing shell. We have a pretty wide range of ages and a mix of men and women.

I was thinking of putting up a board at the Y for people to record their fastest 2k time, but I was hoping that I wouldn't have to post 54 catergories of times to compete in.... (there are about 54 categories of world record times)

I think that there is a formula for masters racing , but I dont know what it is.... any help would be welcome.

You could use this : http://www.nonathlon.com/

It will give point's for gender/age/ and 2 weight's categories.
And although it favours the older ergers somewhat, I think it is usefull for you.

C2 produced a table of adjustment figures a long time ago. IMO, it could be used to normalize Men or Women, but not for men and women.

I.e.
Men of all ages and weights (Open Wt > 165lbs) could be normalized.
Women of all ages and weights (Open Wt > 135lbs) could be normalized.

Creating a ladder ranking for Each Gender.
For some reason the Table gave very generous adjustments to women, for example a 30yr old LW would get 29.72 seconds in pace handicap from a 30 M (Open). Since we know that the LW World Record is 1:44 pace, and the Open M record is 1:24 Pace, the handicap appears a bit generous at the highest standard.

PM if you would like the Spreadsheet with the values, I'll have to find where I put it but I'll search it up if you would like to try it out.
Erg on,

The Perathlon

Post by johnlvs2run » September 25th, 2007, 11:41 am

The Perathlon tables are based on the 2k world records, and equalize performances across gender, the two weight classes, and all ages, for the 10 ranking events.
bikeerg 75 5'8" 155# - 18.5 - 51.9 - 568 - 1:52.7 - 8:03.8 - 20:13.1 - 14620 - 40:58.7 - 28855 - 1:23:48.0
rowerg 56-58 5'8.5" 143# - 1:39.6 - 3:35.6 - 7:24.0 - 18:57.4 - 22:49.9 - 7793 - 38:44.7 - 1:22:48.9 - 2:58:46.2

can you tell me where to find the "Perathlon tables"? or the concept 2 tables?

for the time being, I have just set up a notebook, with each category Being 52, it is sort of nice for me to be able to claim "I'm pretty old"

I am also sort of short, not all that good looking, so I will take any excuse I can get.

I was planning to put the Perathlon tables on a web site so people could input their scores, got the site and page set up but didn't figure out the php to be able to do this. If anyone is interested to contribute for set up of a web site let me know.

I think this is what I was looking for, I am sure it is not perfect, but it helps give me an excuse to lose to my friend, who is 8 years younger, and 75 pounds heavier than me!
