Your first successful 5k

Post by DiMono » September 26th, 2007, 10:37 pm

How long did it take? How much did you suffer after doing it? How does it compare to your current 5k record?

I finished my first 5k today in 22:20 at 25r/m. (That's a 2:14, right?) I'm already feeling it in my forearms. Time will tell how much I feel it tomorrow.

My first real 5K was on May 18, this year. I was only able to to 3K @ 2:10 at the time, but I managed to hang in even though I died completely. Result was 21.32. It stood as a PB for quite a while because I got a bit scared of PB attempts  .

Current PB is 19.55, got almost 10 second of the pace in the last few months.

I did my first 5k at my third day of practice when I joined crew about four years ago. It was also my first erg piece, aside from a few 500m test runs and a warm-up. My technique was awful. I didn't even know what it should feel like, but i do remember it hurting, a lot. I think I got 18:58 or 59. About four months after that I was down to just under 18 minutes. Ultimately, I think it took almost exactly two year to get to my pr, which was 16:48. Right now, I'm a bit out of shape, and I'm trying to see how long it'll take me to get back there. I'll try a 5k in a few weeks, and see how long it takes this time.

I recorded my first 5k piece about a month ago. It wasn't a time trial, just a part of general fitness training. Since then I've become more committed to the erg, and am in the midst of doing time trials to set standards for myself.

The first 5k was 20:24. The test I did last week was 18:49. Aside from it being a time trial versus a regular workout, I did notice a difference in that I felt more confident about technique as well as pace. I felt more prepared fo it, physically and mentally.

And it hurt a lot. It might be a while before I try that again.

Planning my first 5k

Post by iain » October 11th, 2007, 8:10 am

Never done one, done lots of 2k and recently a 1k and 15min.

I have a target (2k less 6.5s split) suggested elsewhere, but any thoughts on how that should be accomplished? Does the 40% (Pace + 1s) 30% (Pace) 20% (Pace - 1s) and 10% (Pace - 2s) suggested and used for 2k still hold? In particular, I was expecting a better pace pick up should be available at the end, but 500m seems a long time to go for it. Also, how do people cope with the first 2000m at a flat pace?

My first 5k was 21:20.0 and was tough. The pace was hard and I was very thankful to get to the finish.

My PB 5k was 2 years later at 18:57.4 and 33 spm, which felt good all the way and I kicked it in the last 500 meters.
