Serious Weight Loss Goals?

Weight Loss/ Weight Control
Hello...<br /><br />I'm one of those that need to lose about 80lbs. I've been playing iwth my rower (got it for christmas) but never really got a serious work out in. This morning I did my first 30 min row going 2859 meters. I don't know if that's good or not, but it's a start.<br /><br />I'm looking to find a/some rowing buddies and of course that ever elusive motivation. <br /><br />Kris<br />North Dallas, Texas

Enthusiasm is good, but if you haven't been working out, be careful to take it easy and not do too much too fast. If you overdo it, it's easy to get sore and frustrated and quit. Take it from one who knows. I started and stopped many times over nearly four years before I finally started slowly and have made it stick.<br /><br />I've been rowing for four weeks today. I just set a new personal best for a 30 minute row. I'm still second to last on the ranking board, but it still feels good to improve.<br /><br />I hope you'll join our team, <i>Row Pain, Row Gain</i>. We have people who are hoping to lose weight and people who have already done so using their C2s. We have people who row a lot and others who are just starting. It can be a little daunting to look at the team list and see guys with 2 or 3 hundred thousand meters, but they provide inspiration! They sure motivated me to keep going and I hit over 100,000 meters for the season earlier this week.<br /><br />Good luck meeting your goals. Keep us posted on your progress.</span><br />

Be careful to take it easy, it is better to increase slowly than to do too much, and get hurt.

Keep us posted on your progress.</span> <br />[/quote]<br /><br />Thanks for the tips. What I've been doing since christmas is rowing about 2 or 3 times a week - if that sometimes. Doing about 15 mins at 27 to 30 SPM. I was kind frustrated thinking I chose the wrong piece of exercise equipment. Having been in the past a fan of treadmills. But, I cut my SPM down and made 30 mins yesterday. First time, so I'm very happy. I've been doing tons of gardening, so formal exercise has been on the back burner. I'm ready to make rowing a regular part of mine daily routine. I'm a bit sore thru my upper back/shoulder blades either from rowing yesterday or the gardening. But I'm going to get on my rower here in a few mins and take a nice easy 30 min row. Just trying to make the time frame, no real speed or distance involved.<br /><br />Thanks for the welcome everyone.<br /><br />Kris<br />

However, the full muscle range it works (including the all important ticker) makes it an ideal exercise machine. As you've discovered, the important thing is pacing yourself so you don't hurt yourself or exhaust yourself. The most important thing for weight loss is duration (to maximize the calories burned). Row at whatever pace you find comfortable and don't get caught up in meters or speed or any of that. The important thing on this team is that we are all doing it! Best of luck Kris.<br />

Hi folks!<br /><br />I just wanted to brag that I'm down to 196 lbs from a high gross tonnage of 225 last fall. Started rowing in mid-March with a used model C.<br /><br />I'm thinking that I might be able to drop to 180, which would be able 12 lbs above my best adult "in shape" weight back when I was 24.<br /><br />Dave (42 yrs, male, 6'1")<br />

Thanks everyone. I believe I'm lighter now than at any time since I was in my 20's. NurseBobbi, I'm currently in my college's virtual team, but thanks for the invite, and good luck to you and all your teammates.<br /><br />Erging is the best, easiest, and most enjoyable exercise I've found. My Model C was well worth the cost, doubly so if you factor in the resale value. I've now reached the point where 2 days without erging makes me cranky.<br /><br />If anyone is wondering whether an erg is a good weightloss device, trust me, it is! It takes almost no time or effort to sit your butt down on the machine and start pulling. Very quickly, your fitness will go up and your times will go down. Along the way, the pounds will melt off and you'll discover muscles you never knew you had. Your partner may discover them too. <br /><br />I also found that small changes in what I eat made a huge difference. I cut back on breakfast a little, and then a little more. Now instead of the number 2 special at the local breakfast joint (2 eggs, toast, hashbrowns, bacon, coffee and juice), I have an oatmeal breakfast bar and class of OJ. I stopped drinking Gin & Tonic's and switched to scotch straight up.<br /><br />I row at night after the kids go to bed. Lately, I've been wearing an ipod and I find the music is lots of fun. I also discovered L-glutamine, an amino acid dietary supplement that really helps relieve sore muscles.<br /><br />Dave<br />

I started rowing last October 2004 at 247 lbs<br /><br />By end of January I was 210 lbs.<br /><br />Today I am 187 lbs, a 60 lb drop from very regular cardio and proper eating<br /><br />the bad news<br /><br /><br />hurt my back at the end of January rowing, went through many months of modified training, PT regular visits, repeated doctor visits, then xrays, bone scane and now a back specialist. The result, I tore a muscle in mid back, havnt rowed much since my initial injury. The specialist gave me a direct steroid injenction to see if it helps. So far not real great, I still exercise regularly but no rowing <br /><br /><br />the moral of this story is rowing and proper eating are great for loosing weight but please listen to your body and dont overdue it like I did.

Great work Dave. Likewise jschmidt...sorry to hear about the injury. Listening to your body is definitely sound advice.<br /><br />My progress update since my last weigh in finds me down 4.8 pounds. So, since April 21, I am down 19 lbs. 196.8/177.8/150 (Start/Current/Goal). Keep going team!

I think I joined your team. I hope I did and if I did thank you to the people who launched it. I started and stopped rowing (one Month) a couple of years ago, found it to intimidating when I couldn't compete with the 70 year olds. Sounds like we are all in the same boat (Literally) and am looking forward to starting again with a real Virtual team. I also need to lose 35 lbs (Dr. Orders) and so far have gained 3. I have a purpose to put the time in for the TEAM, lets rock and row! (Where my original posting went I have no idea? I'm very ignorant when it comes to the whole typing/posting thing, however I can shop on the internet very well!)<br />Thanks and good luck to all. <br />Mary
