Remember Eakins wasn't a Brit but American

Not very humble, but a friend of mine filmed my start on a single competition in Banyoles a couple of weeks ago:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5l2TtXPuA2s
aka "The lonelyness of the single sculler"
Luckily he didn't arrive to film the arrival (I didn't get to maintain the pace for the whole 2k   )
Anyway, 40+ spm for the first meters (JR would be proud of me), and without flipping! B)

I found this last weekend in Banyoles:
My former coach and actual masters-crewmate Martinico rowing on the bow of Spain's lwt eight in Lucerne 1981.
That year they got bronze in the world champs in Munich! B)

Ahh, good ol' wooden oar-times :?
Image
They are wearing the traditional Spanish yellow and black aio.
Today in Spain, the rowing aio's still are called "platanito" (small banana) :D

Ancho,

What kind of boat is it? With the high free board and short bow, it appears to be a touring boat, especially since is a 4x+, an unusual combination. I know that you have done some surfboat competition, but it did not appear to me to be that sort of craft.

It's a 4x+ gig boat, and it's quite usual for coastal rowing in Europe.
The most known builders are Euro-Diffusions and MPS, but there may be others.
In Germany there are lots of gigs for river rowing, which, with some adaptions, maybe also may be adequate.

And in Amsterdam I have seen a very nice Hudson gig.
The usual competition boat types are 1x, 2x and 4x+

BTW, although I have tried surf-rowing, I have not (yet) competed in surf boats!

It is nice to see that they have real, stern-mounted rudders rather than the postage stamps that serve on the current racing shells.
