Break up your training?
Seems to be the case. I am hearing similar things from different places. Also I was turned on to a technique on another forum. This couple is sharing an erg and kettlebells. One person does 500M and the other is doing snatches, jerks, whatever, I imagine you can do whatever. I suppose bodyweight stuff would be fine too. Trading off when the 500M is reached.
I am guessing longer repetitive movements, even with varying intensity have a diminishing return over time. Likely a survival mechanism in the body, wanting to be as efficient as possible.
I am still working on getting my erging dialed in and my gimpy knee up to par before I start going crazy. I can only do 2k pieces at the moment, the knee is up to 1.5k before it starts in on me.... Better than it was though. I am only a couple weeks in, I am happy with the progress.
