I need help buying an erg

Post by JohnFlynn » May 25th, 2007, 9:46 am

Hey everyone,

I'm a high school student on a rowing team. This year bring my first year rowing, I have pulled a 2k of 6:57 at 146 pounds (about an 18.6 fitness), which I've been told is exceptionally well for my experience. However the season just ended, and I no longer have access to and erg. I want to buy an erg, but I do not any spare time at all for a job and am receiving no financial help from my parents. I really wish to train over this summer and I don't want to waste what I have built this year. So I have a small favor to ask. If anyone who understands my situation and wouldn't mind to drop in a small donation to my fund, it would be most generous and appreciated. I have a small goal of $500 to buy a used erg, preferable one similar to the concept 2 ergs we use.
Thanks guys, it is so greatly appreciated.

"not any spare time at all for a job and am receiving no financial help from my parents"?

You're kidding, right?

Perhaps you should give a bit more detail about how you fill each 24hr day, and there must be something you can do around the house to earn a few bucks, not that chores really need to be paid for, but ambition/productivity does tend to be rewarded.

PS - Don't bother buying less than a C2 Ergometer.

yes thats true. I'm going to summer school, have a family that needs attention, and I'm 15 which makes getting hired hard.

Well which is it, "no spare time at all for a job" or "I'm 15 which makes getting hired hard."? It's nice that you see your family as needing attention, especially at the age of 15 when many kids take family for granted, and that you are attending summer school. How did you make time for Rowing this past season?

Rowing was during school, we have summer in 3 weeks. As far as family is concerned, I assist my dad who has a herniated back. The main reason on why I'm doing this is because I dont have many resources to help me buy one, thats all.

We had no off season access to ergs and still trained HARD during our summer breaks. C2 ergs weren't available yet then, but had they been, they'd have been a luxury none of us could have afforded nor enjoyed having at home.

Run, lift weights, swim, bicycle, do push ups, chin ups, sit ups, flutter kicks, jump squats, lunges, etc. There are a number of exercises and activities you can do to stay fit and gain strength and not "waste what you've built". Certainly you can figure out a schedule to be available for your family's needs and still have workout time.

Call the nearest gyms and ask if they have C2 ergs at their facilities or check Concept 2's list of gyms that have C2 ergs, then approach the owner/manager and ask if you can work part-time for a membership or solely erg use. Bicycle or run to and from for increased cardio work.

Edit adendum: Consider adding jumping rope and running stairs (stadiums) or wind-sprints up hills to your mix.

"I want this thing but I can't afford it. Will you help me buy it?"

Here's how to make some REAL money: sell the contact info for anyone who's responded positively to that sales pitch. Marks like that are worth top dollar.

Rtmmtl, That's amazing! B)

Storm has a great suggestion, and I offer this tweak to the working a bit for use at a club. Since you appear to have an idea what you are doing, offer to train the club personnel on the proper technique for the use of the Erg for the summer. That is, if the whole begging thing didn't actually work out.

Sorm also made some great suggestions regarding cross training that would be more than enough, and not require time away from home if you are needed there to assist your father.

Thats not a bad idea. There is a ymca a few blocks from my house, I however fantasized about owning my own and the 2 ergs they have are usually in use. I'll check and see how involved they are as far as rowing in concerned.
