Just did my first half-marathon!

Post by ciproano » April 28th, 2007, 4:29 pm

I am a happy quacking duck, just finished that 21097!! I was most worried about getting saddle sore, but wasn't too bothered until after 15k. Usually when I row 10k, the soreness sets in after 7, so it must have been the mental conditioning.

I'd hoped to do a full marathon, but have been slowed by injury. I set my sights on the half, and I am excited to have done it (can you tell?!?)

Greetings to all the Ducks, and looking forward to rowing with you for the whole season when we roll over to it on Tuesday!

Congratulations, Cindy!

I had been thinking that I might try a HM during this challenge, but April was hard on my erging. Minor sicknesses and injuries.

Come on, Ducks! Let's get quacking for the new season. :D

half marathon

Post by Meri » May 22nd, 2007, 4:07 pm

Hi Cindy and all,
I did my first half marathon of the season yesterday. My time stinks compared to last year, but I'm not too sore. Have not ever tried a full marathon but hope to try it by the end of summer. Best of luck to all the ducks!

I took the plunge this morning, and went for my first HM.
Pathetically slow @ 2:39. But the distance doesn't seem quite so daunting now.
Lots to work on still, but it sure felt great to have completed it.

Way to go, Storm Petrel!!

Conga-rats, SP!! Not sure if you mean your pace was 2:39 splits, or it was 2 hrs and 39 min, but either way, it is a terrific sense of accomplishment!

I erg because I love it as exercise, and I do these contests because they motivate me to keep at it. I'm not at all fast, but I do like to keep up a steady beat. Like I said in the original post, the hardest part was sitting for two hours! I have more bubble wrap on my seat, handles and cushion than a UPS store! I was hoping it would inspire me to do more longer weekend rows, like 15s instead of the usual weekend 10s. So far it hasn't. But with the Summer Solstice row coming up, I'm thinking that I'll need to throw in some 12s and 15s to be ready for it. Of course, the SS row is on a Thursday, and unless I take a vacation day, I'm not sure I'll have time to do it in one sitting. If I recall correctly, the rules allow it to be split as long as it is on the 21st, is that so? Even so, on days when I row 5k in the morning and another 5k in the evening, I find that pretty tiring, so doing 10 and 11 will be quite a challenge. Hmmm, maybe I can slip of out work early so I can row in the late afternoon instead of after 6pm.

I am also slowly creeping up on my next millionth meter (my third, yeehaw)...in January I was hoping to get there by June, but here it is June and I'm still 150k away. Maybe some nice long rows would push me there by 4th of July. Oh, the inspriration!

Are you thinking of doing the Solstice row? Let's go for it!!

Thanks Cindy!
Sorry I didn't make that clear, it was a 2:39 split so I managed to squeek in under the 2 hour mark, (1:51:50). I sat on some bubble wrap also, but still felt the seat toward the end. C2s newsletter stated that the Solstice Row could be more than one row as long as it's on the 21st, but like you, it's a work day for me, and getting in the 2nd row will be tough. I have to be in a meeting all day the 20th so I know getting out early on the 21st won't happen for me. Thank goodness for the longer days, which is what we're celebrating the Solstice for! (I don't want the daylight to wane just yet!)

So yes I'm going for the Solstice row, and will I try for all in one row. Now I have an idea how long I need to get my arse out of bed early enough.
Yes, we CAN do it!
And the Blue Moon Row on the 30th (which is two rows in one day (each row being at least 5000 meters in length).
That'll get the meters up and flying!

21K before Breakfast?? Wow!

Post by ciproano » June 15th, 2007, 9:40 pm

Storm, you are awesome, going for 21k in the morning before work!! Just this week I am trying to get readjusted to morning workouts. Since I got back to erging as my primary exercise (last Oct.), it is almost always evenings after work or afternoons on weekends. But it really puts a cramp in the day/evening, so now that it is light at 5 am, it is a bit easier to haul myself out of bed and get going. But I am very, very slow in the morning, just can't get it cranked up. It has been a battle to keep my average time under 3:00s! And since it takes more time, I'm not doing more than 6 or 7k, as I have to be in the shower by 6 to get my teenage sons going by 6:30. Oh, boy, aren't I the whiner tonight!

Anyway, I'm thinking that for the Solstice, I will do at least 7 but under 10 in the morning, then plan to get out of the office early enough to start the second piece by 4 pm. The next day I am traveling to Cleveland to visit my folks, so it will be a good time for a day off. While in Cleveland, we found an excellent gym nearby that has a couple C2s that are rarely in use when I go...they are not in very good condition but workable. The people there must think I'm nuts as I bring my strips of small bubble wrap to put around the handles, and I have a small egg-crate foam pad that is wrapped in big bubble wrap that fits nicely on the C2 seat. I am very spoiled to it even if I'm only going for 30 minutes!

I will definitely do the Blue Moon. I did a calculation of what I expect my "meterage" to be over the next couple weeks til the end of June, and it is likely that I WILL be able to hit that 3 million in that time. Yabba dabba doo. Now, if I could just loose 10 pounds...

Good luck with the Solstice row, let me know how it goes!

Cindy

Aw, thanks Cindy, but really, the morning is my time of day.
Biorhythms or whatever, we all have an optimum time when we are at our strongest. For me it's morning.
And I do so much better with no food. I'd have to wait hours after eating if I wanted to do a long or intense piece. I'm not a breakfast eater anyway (yes, I know it's the most important meal of the day) but I'm certainly ready to eat AFTER I row!
15K this AM. I know I can do the distance in the cooler mornings, especially with the heat we are experiencing now. I'm working on conditioning in the heat, but my tongue has really been hanging out on the hot evening rows.

The handle doesn't bother me (I've got pretty ranch weary hands anyway), I'd think bubble wrap on the handles would be slippery when sweating, no? Even with terry wrist bands, the handle gets sweaty on my long pieces. I was thinking of slipping terry socks on the handle. I will definately be using my piece of bubble wrap and high density foam on the seat for the long piece! I found I couldn't make it too thick though or I felt like I was sitting too high.

And good luck to you too, Cindy, I'll be thinking of ya girl, and cheerin' from afar!
