Weight Loss/ Weight Control

Post by [old] Bill » February 5th, 2005, 3:45 am

Hello,

I do like a glass or two of red.

Looking it up in a book 1 glass red = 425 KJoule divide by 4.18 = 102 calories

= 1600m on the erg at 2:03

So I plan to keep on enjoying red and doing an extra bit on the erg.

Similarly I had some chocolate today and that is going to cost me approx 500kJoule for 25gm(6 squares).

so lets call that another 120 Kcal = approx 2000m

it adds up hey ?

Reality check : - I know theres a factor of 1000, something to do with Calories and Kcalories in here that people tend to forget about but I cant see where I might have gone wrong. Cant see 1 glass red being worth 1,600,000m or alternately only 1.6m

Bill

Bill,

The numbers look sensible; my HR monitor suggests I use around 1,000 calories during a steady 60 min session and I would normally do this at around 2:00 pace. So, 100 calories = 1600 m seems right.

Having said this I am not sure that a glass of red wine every 1600 m is a sensible or responsible approach to either erging or drinking.

You may be steady enough to be able to drink a glass of red whilst erging but I know that I would spill some (I would refuse to consume it from a drinks bottle; red wine deserves more respect.) and you cannot really stop every 1600 m.

Also, past experience has shown that despite many hours of hard, dedicated practice I would be unable to consume the red wine needed during a HM never mind a full one!

Nice idea but I think I will stick to enjoying a glass or two with my evening meal or by the fire.

Bill,
I hope that the glass or two is Victorian red!

I usually do not try to think too much when imbibing and also prefer to stay away from the chocolate as I find the two do not mix (headaches).

Incidentally, my understanding is that there is no difference between calories and kcalories ie 1calorie=1kcalorie=4.18kjoules.
Robbo

Defined as the amount of heat energy required to raise the temperature of 1kg of water by 1°C.
Please note: Throughout this guide we have used the commonly accepted term calorie whereas technically the correct term is kilocalorie.

Godfried & Robbo -

1 calorie = amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water by 1 degree C. (1000 calories = 1 kilocalorie & 1 cal = 4.184 J)

BUT capitalize and 1 Calorie is the "dietary calorie" and 1 Calorie = 1 kilocalorie. Explaining this to college chemistry students semester after semester nearly drove me crazy; happily all US texts have switched to Joules.

It's a drag (!) for me to look at the Calorie/hr setting on the monitor. Tipping the scales at only 56kg means I burn maybe 1/2 the Calories appearing on the monitor (the PM uses a body mass of 76kg or so in calculating Cal/hr).

Good news for the heavy heavyweight guys, though - you may only really need 1200m to burn off some red wine or 1500 to 2000m for a Guinness. Kind of explains why my husband (93kg) devours everying on the dinner table after doing an evening erg workout.
Mary P.

Hi, Carla -
Water season was (and is) great - BIG win in the Head of the Charles (Master W8+), along with all sorts of wins in regional races. We're still having races on the water; this past Sunday our club had one of our head race/brunch series-actually pretty fierce racing. Will be at CRASH-B's, too.

Still training on the erg as ever, and hope you've completely recovered enough to have returned to form.

Enjoyed a few glasses of red wine yesterday while watching the Patriots win & made up for them by erging lots 'o meters very early this morning. Too early to calculate if I rowed enough meters to work off the wine & I can't deal with large numbers that early in the morning.
Cheers,
Mary
