After I posted last night, I realized the best way to do an indoor tank, would be to increase the width and/or depth as one went "downstream" so the water velocity varied from very slow at one end to very fast at the other. If you rowed steadily, then you could tell your average speed by your position in the tank. If it was designed properly you would never hit the end even in an all out sprint. If the water was sucked off the bottom uniformly at the slow end (the suction would stop upstream from the wall by a boat length or two) then you could rest there without paddling.

The flow in any tank would be non uniform with depth and width (unless you went through some trouble to make it otherwise). This could be an advantage to simulate turns. If your in the center of the tank then you would be rowing with equal pressure to hold the boat straight. At the sides you would have to provide more pressure on one oar.

This sounds very doable and not terribly difficult, just very very expensive.

Here's a video of the prototype of the new RP:

Looks nice, although some of the "exciting" new features seem quite familiar :?

I saw that off of Rebecca Caroe's blog site. Looks like he took JR's stationary seat idea. I guess that it's configuration emphasizes the use of the legs in the drive and mimics relaxing the legs and slowing the recovery like otw. For that reason it may be a benefical dry land trainer for more seasoned otw rowers. However, it's probably a totally different feel that would take some getting used to, so, for those training for indoor racing, I'm doubtful training strictly on a RP would easily transfer into using a C2 on race day. But I'd try one if I'm at a race and Xeno is there with a demo.

Warren Berger made a dynamic fixed seat erg, from a concept2 model B quite some time ago.

His design is different from the later RP design, more stable, and I like it much better.

Why would anyone train on a Rowperfect in order to race on a C2????

Rowperfect have their own races and world record books just like C2 but obviously on a much smaller scale until popularity increases.

At the moment more OTW rowers than gym rats use the Rowperfect so the culture would be different from C2.

One would have to consider what they really want from an erg before changing brands. Either way they are both just ergs (pieces of gym equipment) so spending a lot of time on an erg can still get very boring. They are both poor substitutes for the real thing.

Caution: Static C2 ergs can ruin your technique and timing for rowing in a boat.
The best thing I ever did to improve my rowing was to sell my C2 and get a Rowperfect.

Roland, shouldn't you be in your boat -- what are you doing in here.

It's my day off from rowing on the water so I'd thought I'd come back indoors to play on my erg.

How about you Johnny, when are you going to modify your erg into something more dynamic (like Warren's perhaps)? You know that you'll never be able to make it float.

Maybe I'll meet you on the virtual river once you get that thing hooked up to Rowpro. I'll promise not to go below 220 pace so that we can still see each others scullers on the monitor. Come on, it would be loads of fun.
