I've got some video and I'm hoping one of the other rowers took a photo of our distinguished leaders in their AIOwith matching fleeces and baseball caps, SHARP!!

I had a wicked time at SLIRC, it really was great to get back into competitive indoor rowing.

Started off with the bleep test. Expected to drop out at 1:42 but managed to get as far as 1:38 but couldn't complete that round. If anyone's interested, I noted down my splits for the bleep test (for each target pace we were allowed up to 0.9secs outside the target in order to progress to the next stage)

Target / Actual / SR
2:30 / 2:20.1 / r19
2:25 / 2:21.5 / r19
2:20 / 2:18.2 / r20
2:15 / 2:13.9 / r20
2:10 / 2:09.3 / r22
2:05 / 2:05.0 / r23
2:00 / 1:59.5 / r24
1:58 / 1:57.6 / r24
1:56 / 1:55.3 / r26
1:54 / 1:54.0 / r26
1:52 / 1:51.9 / r28
1:50 / 1:49.8 / r29
1:48 / 1:47.9 / r30
1:46 / 1:46.0 / r31
1:44 / 1:44.5 / r33
1:42 / 1:42.3 / r35
1:40 / 1:40.6 / r36
1:38 / 1:46.0 / r34

In the 1K race I managed to get within 2 seconds of my 1K PB (3:30.7) so that was a real shock. I had a good start (got the pace down to 1:27  ) then settled into 1:48s. Had enough to go for the line with 200 metres to go and realy put in a strong spurt to finish in 3:31.6.

I had my name down for the relay too but my co-relayer didn't feel up to it after the 1K race :(

All in all a fantastic day. Looking forward to the 24-hour relay next weekend!

Hey Niall,
I wonder if you would have got further down if you had started actually doing only 2:30 at the beginning? or not. I've never done the Bleep test so my thought is probably wrong, but suspect you could have made it further. How long are the intervals in the Bleep test? Sounds perfectly hellish.
Congrats on your good day!

I got a silver in the 40-49LWT 1K (handicap) with a PB of 3:23.3 (after you subtract my 18sec handicap).

I rowed the 1K open relay with John Foy (Team Oarsome) and got bronze.

I was too much of a coward to go for the bleep test.

Excellent day, excellent company. Good racing.

(until Frank gets the stuff on his website).
Boy am I glad you joined the Taffs, Dougie! great job on the 1K and relay. Don't blame you on the Bleep test. It would certainly scare the Bleep out of me.

Good to see my mate Chippy blow his head off to complete the 1:36 in the bleep - teritory he's never visited before - well done mate.

Also good to Niall back and fighting - Niall keep focusing on the positives butt.

Being a 30-39 Hwt I don't get to see many trophies (not what I'm there for anyway!), so when I do I feel the need to tell all.

Went to defend a bronze, came away with a silver - Tried to win gold by cheating (or at least put Andy Jones/Toddler off), but they were having none of it. Chased them all the way and were narrowly beaten by about 75 meters! - HA HA.

Cheers

I like the new nick! Bronze would have been nice but silver is nicer, congrats.

That Bleep Test sounds like quite the event. So does everyone start the intervals at the same time, then people drop out until last man standing (well, erging) wins? I had to do something similar on my own when I started training, but it sounds like a neat sadistic event for a public competition too. And sounds like you outdid yourself on it, Niall. Great stuff!

Actually wasn't as bad as I'd been dreading it might be. I really like the little rests between! This was my first time ever trying that sort of session, so I was testing the waters a bit. Hopefully will be able to try again when I get home.

Everyone starts out at the same pace (2:30) and the target pace is increased by 5 seconds up to 2:00 pace then by 2 seconds through to 1:30 when it increases by 1 second.

And you're right, people drop out until such time there's only one left. This At this year's SLIRC, that last man was Nik Fleming by getting down to 1:23

Congrats everyone on a great day at SLIRC. I'd like to see the pics...whos got 'em?

I've never done a bleep test, but I do believe that the intervals are one minute on, one minute off. The starting point is based on your SB 2k score. It doesn't sound fun!!

The Bleep test last year had the starting point based on 2K PB times but for this year it was decided everyone would start at the same point. The event is still very much in its development stage and while it was acknowledged the 2:30 starting point didn't make great viewing for spectators, it acted as a good warmup for the competitors. That's not to say it wont change next year though.

There's some photos and video available online from Rowland Hills who competed:

I also filmed the whole Bleep test event so will be creating some snippets for everyone to view. Hopefully Rowlands piccies and video will whet your appetite for now.
