Most intense erg workout that you have experienced/ heard of

Post by sammac112 » February 21st, 2007, 11:33 pm

Whats the most intense erg workout you have ever experienced/ heard of?

Personally,

last summer, the day after a regatta, our boats still had to be rigged so our coach decided to have us erg.

We dragged outside 12 ergs and assembled them in a circle. Then, our coach split us up into 12, 2 man teams and told us were we going to erg 500 meters and rest while our partners did their 500, for an hour and a half.

That was pretty horrible in 80 degree heat.

That's easy. An all out 2K if you are really doing it right. Too long to be an all out sprint, too short to make any mistakes at all. You HAVE TO hit it right. IMHO that's why they use that distance for the WIRC (used to be 2500M or even longer in those very early CRASH B years).

Guess that's not technically a "workout "per your question - but nothing hurts more.

Not sure you coach did you much good by doing 90 minutes for 2' on 2' off. That's not a very benificial workout if you ask me. Just serves to beat down the kids he's supposed to be training. I obvously don't perscribe to the credo "That which beats you down only makes you stronger." More like "That that makes you strong, makes you stonger."
If you don't try, you will never know how bad you suck.

yeah, a 2k erg is bloody hard. i managed to scare everyone after i last raced, the first aid officer was hovering near me and my wife was extremely worried.

the last 1k in a 4 x 1000m session is a ball breaker. again the wife gets concerned.

also, a gas test measuring V02 max and lactate is about the toughest. You have a mask and peg over your nose and you get to increase the intensity until you cant pull anymore. Meanwhile someone is pricking your ear to get blood to measure lactic acid. one of the testers managed to prick my ear too much and blood was pouring everywhere and I still punched the test out.

though not rowing - i once ran a marathon and that is hard. legend has that I climbed out of an ambulance to finish it. I in fact had some cramps and they subsided and I was able to finish.

rowing is not for princesses.

Yea, all out 2k's are definitely tough, although I've never pushed myself to the brink of passing out (not yet). Another tough one is 45sec on, 15 off x 10. You finish one, then 2 easy strokes, then build into another. 7 x 1000m with 8 min rest in between is good to. I'm sure I'll think of some other hard ones we did.

I hate 45 sec on/15 sec off.

Those and 5 strokes on, 20 off as HARD AS YOU CAN with teh damper set at a 10... 10 sets of those.

I like 45/15's - have done 3 sets of 10 a few times, and 25x once.

The hardest most intense is the marathon.

Imagine being trashed at 2 hours and still having 1 more hour to go.

Has to be a two k as a trial. My last one I hit 750m left and couldn't see anything for a few strokes. After that trial, I must've taken the longest time to recover ever. Still wasn't walking properly twenty minutes afterwards.
