age, height coefficient/adjustment formula?

Post by Pavel » February 19th, 2007, 11:31 am

I know there is a weight calculator which allows to compare the performance of athletes with respect to their weight. I was wondering whether there is something similiar that would take into account also rowers age and height.. I do not expect 100pct fair results.. I would like to do a race for a bunch of friends of all ages and I am looking for a way how to compare their performances..

Check out the C2 rankings, which categorize performances posted based on both age & weight categories. You could race for highest percentile for each person in their own age category--depending on the age of your racers, some age/weight categories are more competitive than others.

There is also the nonathlon, which
lets you compete on equal terms with other Concept2 rowers of all ages. You compete against everyone, but using the previous years rankings you are only scored against the best times/distances for your own age, weight, and sex. This gives everyone a more equal chance of winning.
I'm not sure how you could use that for an individual performance, but I suppose each of your racers could create a "new" ID then race for nonathlon points. Better, set up a series, and you could try out the various nonathlon "events" and use achieved points as scores.

You might want to check in on the rowpro group, since I've read about handicap races there regularly. I believe those are set based on reported scores, so you would need to have people who had scores to report to use their system.

Just some ideas. Good luck!

Nothing on height though.
Although that is certainly an important factor

IMHO, if you want to adjust accurately for height, weight and a myriad of other factors, just put everyone on the water in a 1x and see who gets from the starting gate to the finish line the fastest time.

Oh no, that doesn't work, we forgot to make adjustments for technique and level of experience

Not a problem in this case. All the people I had in mind have the same level of rowing experience - none and as for talent, I am afraid it is oriented in other areas... Weight, height and age coefficient would do. Thanks for everyone´s suggestion, though.
