Weight Loss/ Weight Control
Hi Janice
I am going to check out the WW forum on rowing.
If I row fifty minutes on the erg during a group workout a the Iron Oarsman I will burn five hundrerd calories... Depending on how intensive I go after it I burn more calories. If I row a 60' steady state piece on my own I tend to burn C2 caloires of approximately 1250 in one hour (split time wise it is between 1:45-1:50). That load of workout is off the chart with weightwatchers.

I found a great snack...(cold) apple sauce: 0.5points per 4oz.
Sometime soon I am going to have less alocated food points because of weighing less. As long as I properly susbsitute my activity points with food I hope that I will keep dropping the weight without getting hungry.

I am certain that their is a way for you to drop the weight, with the combination rowing and WW.
Good luck
XENO

Xeno,

Haven't seen you on there, but if you are looking for us on WW we are under the fitness challenge thread. Our group has gone quiet lately, maybe you can provide us with some new blood and inspiration.

I think I can lose weight too, but I've only got 20lbs left and that's when it gets hard. I've dropped 75lbs already so my body seems to be plateauing for awhile and picking up muscle mass rather than shedding pounds.

I'm also doing WW and just started rowing to help speed things along. I've noticed several comments about not being able to eat enough on points. Have any of you considered switching to the new Core plan?

Mrs. Mediocre,

I have and I'm going to do a little reading about it, but I have somethings I don't really want to give up. I think my lack of weightloss is largely due to strength training. After reading the boards it seems that a number of women who do it aren't losing weight, but still drop sizes, which I have. Thanks!

I am happy to read that you are seeing some positive results.
I am still not satisfied with our knowledge: exercise calories burnt = possible food calories. We need to bring this up to weightwatchers.
In th meantime keep on rowing, it is the most efficient calorie burner you can put your hands on.

Unrelated information: I own a van that advertises the IRON OARSMAN and on it is also says: Get off your bike and row. We also thought of writing: get on your butt and do something.

Get on your butt and do something, I like that.

I would encourage any of you wanting to lose weight to monitor various circumferences too, as well as fitness level, how you feel, and how you look in the mirror.

Especially for those new to erging, it will build some (lots) of lean body mass. This will happen to everyone who is erging I think, to some extent. So if you are erging, and your weight is staying the same, then chances are you are losing body fat.

Don't think of the numbers on the scales as the only way to measure the success of your diet / training regime.

Keep up the great work everyone.

Pete

Does anyone know how WW defines "race pace" and "moderate"? My normal routine is 5000k a day (as a newbie to the exercise and weight loss) in 30 minutes. That doesn't sound like a race pace to me but then again there are also 2 separate "race pace" entries in the points calc....

- b

Concept2's monitor calculates calories burned assuming you weigh one hundred and fifty pounds.
Have you checked the total calories burned for for five thousand meters? Once you have that number cross check it with the exercise calculator and activity calculator, let me know how you interepret the information from WW.

I figure 1 AP for every 2k rowed. When I row an odd amount, I usually bump it up. So 5k is 3 APs. It depends somewhat on how hard you row, but I would figure this method is fairly accurate when you get your HR in the 65-80% range. For me, race pace is anything under 1:55/500m.

It on the fitness challenge thread. I don't think I've made a thread since last week as no one seemed interested and I was tired of being by myself.

Oh ok. I was starting to think I was crazy. Hey - I'll post if you do (although I've been rowing in the evenings lately...).

I just started the WW on Sunday. That's my excuse for not being around.

- beth

Beth,
Have you been able to figure out your race versus moderate pace for the erg? I had a hard time trying to determine the number of APs earned for rowing on the water and for using the erg. The best advice I received was from the WW Daily Strokes message board to count 1 AP for every 2k. I think this is fairly accurate. When I started calculating 1 AP for every 2k I rowed I began to lose weight. For example today, I used the erg for 40 minutes and went slightly over 9,000 and the calories burned were over 500. I counted this as 4 APs. Janice is much younger than I and can get away with making that 5 APs. I think that you will need to be very vigilant of how many APs you use and determine if you can round up or down on your 5k erg.
~Grace

Can anyone from Concept 2 confirm Xeno's assertion that the calories burned function on the PM2 (for the Model C I use) is based on a 150 lb. person?

When I do my Wolverine Level 4's for 60 minutes (using a 1:38 ref) it shows that I'm burning close to 1100 calories (my avg. split for the 60 mins are anywhere from 1:57.5 to 1:58.5 and my avg spm will be around 17.6 to 18 based on the split breakdown for the sequences I'm using...) If Xeno is right, could it be that I am burning close to 2000 calories for that workout? (I currently weigh 248lbs at 6'4" ) .....

If this is true, is there a reliable formula for figuring out just exactly how many calories are burned - or is that an inexact science because that figure depends on the individual's base metabolic rate??

just curious.....

D

I think like most exercise equipment, the caloried readout just gives you a general idea of how many you burned and is not terribly accurate. I think to get an accurate figure you would need to wear a heart monitor and then use a variety of formulas to calculate how many calories you burned if the monitor doesn't give a read out. I think though that 2k roughly equals 100 calories burned, which tends to roughly match the C2 read out.
