What is needed for sub 6??
first ergo
Trully the first time Hurnet Dekkers (a Dutch rower) sat on the ergo, she pulled 7.05. Some rowers saw here sitting and encouraged here. Pretty fast considering she is a girl (later on she managed to pull 6.35 and she is an impressive 6ft. 3).

Back to the original question. Can a 6ft guy pull a 6min 2k?
The answer is yes. His name is Jason Read. Rowed the bow seat in the US eight in 2004. He is about 6ft, 185lbs. Pulled 5:59 and change when I talked to Teti about it. As Teti said, "Jason was packing some serious heat at 185lbs and sub six."
This erg score makes alot of sense considering what some of the lwt have done who are a similar size to Jason. Colon Groom is 6'1 and pulled 6:04 as a lwt, then he put on 20-25 of muscle. He then pulled 5:56. I bet if Elia gained 20-30lbs of muscle he would be sub-six as well.

I don't think anyone is saying sub-6 min is impossible. but, it will be a very rare 6 ft guy who can do it.
If you look at the national team test results from last year, I dont think you'll find anyone 6 ft or below with a sub 6 min. erg.
since the best lwts in the world are about 6 ft and they haven't broken 6 minutes yet, you'd have to be able to beat the very fastest guys of the same height. extra muscle or not, that would be a major accomplishment.
- there's a big difference between 6:04 and sub-6 for someone around 6 ft...

glancing though some old US team testing results, I find:
April, 2004: Andrew Brennan 5:57.9 6'0" 185 lbs
March 2003 Andrew Brennan 5:57.3
April 2003 Andrew Brennan 5:55.6
I can't say I looked at every testing page since 2002-2003, but he's the only guy I found.
Impressive! 5:55 at 6 ft...

Jbell, another thing to consider is that rowing is a sport when you tend to peak older. You are 16 and a jr. now, so you'll probably be 22? when you graduate? Our sport has a whold seperate u23 category, most elite rowers are older. Another thing is they say 10 years into training is when you peak. YOu started at 14? That is the best age to start because your training time peak corresponds with a good age. Not saying that you can't get better after 10 years but that is supposed to be the ideal. As have been discussed tehre are many many who have hopped onto an erg or inot a boat and been naturals. Anyway it is definatly possible but it'll take a hell of a lot. Don't burn out now though.

I pulled 6:53 a couple weeks ago (I think 2 or 3) and am doing another one this Friday. Going for sub 6:50. I row close to every day according to what workouts are recommended by our coach. On seasons for me are Fall, Winter and Spring, and summer has always been a kind of off season. Freshmen to sophomore was very little rowing and sophomore to junior year I logged 100K+ meters.
