John - I don't know about racing against somebody else just yet. Trying to beat those demons in my head is hard enough some days! I've tried RowPro but since my erg is in the basement I needed to use my old laptop and for some reason the USB on it is not very friendly with the PM3. I've tried to update it but there's nothing I can do at the moment.

Another great time by Mark in the CTC. Hopefully I can try and improve mine later in the month too.

Best of luck to Brigitte and Margaret in their goals.

I managed another PB last night, this time in the 10K. I'd gone down after work (11.15pm) and was just going to do a steady 10K. I set out at 1.54 pace and held it all the way and knocked 61.3 seconds off my best. I went through 30 minutes at 7900m (30 metres from my PB ), so that'll be the next to fall, hoping to break 8000m before the end of 06.

Cheers

Great rows Dave! You're on a roll these days.

I'm trying to stay motivated for the HC. I'm 1 row away from half way to 200k, and my 10 year old son is 1 row away from half way to 50K!

Cheers,

Kirk

Kirk, you and you son can do it! Just think of how bad you would feel if you didn't. Get out there and go for it!

Keep on rowin', eh.

We have turned the corner at Sao Paulo. One of the world's largest cities.
It looks like an incredible place.

There have been some great times on the C2C challenge, but we need a few more people to fill up boat 2.

Excellent effort and times so far. I have been concentrating mainly on the holiday challenge and should finish up this Saturday. I plan to do a 5K warm up then do the 5K challenge. I will see if I can crack 19 minutes.

Awesome row Brian. Wow! I'd be happy with sub 18 but to be close to 17. Fantastic!

Good luck Trevor! Hope it doesn't hurt too much!

I'm almost done the HC just under 16K left to do. I managed to complete my PB assault a couple days ago, moving the 60 minutes up to 15482. That makes new PBs in all events from 2K to 60 minutes since November 21. Hopefully I can move closer to 18 minutes in the CTC and maybe improve the 500 and 1K too.

Merry Christmas everybody!

Well, I absolutely blew up on the 5K. I was on track to do 19 minutes and with 176m to go I was deeply anoxic but alive. I thought I had 17 pulls left: then my mind snapped and I stopped cold. For some reason the thought of 17 more strokes just was more than my brain could take. So I sat there in absolute shock for twenty seconds then decided to finish.

What is with that? Probably a good experience in the long view because at least now, when I try again, I know that anoxia will make me do stupid things and hopefully I can ignore my brain and just push on.

I am still pretty pissed at myself, hopefully I can convert that into something useful.

Good on you Dave, very impressive to do all those PB's in such a short period

Oh yeah, amazing time Brian. As I went past 17.09 I was looking at the remaining distance to go and marvelling at your speed.

Don't you just hate that? You should be able to get through it next time.

We have blasted through 44,000,000 meters. Congratulations to all you hosers.

Keep on rowin', eh.

I may have to change my tactics on pushing myself . Up until now I have always waited for the last minute then went flat out while counting the last 34 or so strokes with my eyes closed and just concentrated on maximum force and speed. This time I finished the count (I decided to start the sprint at 400 meters left) and found myself with 176 metres left, recalculated this was seventeen strokes, then my mind panicked, I lost all hope and just stopped cold.

In retrospect my error seems to be in sprinting too early. I probably don't have enough gas in the tank to do a 400 metre sprint versus a 200 metre sprint. When confronted with the ugly reality of another 30 seconds of no oxygen and lots of lactic acid my brain just shut the whole thing down.

I have never been a competitive athlete, so this pushing myself for the CTC challenge has been extremely educational. I remember watching the Olympics or the Tour de France and watching some one lose a race in the last 2 metres or so and thinking "surely they could just push themselves that tiny bit extra when everything is on the line and this could be their only shot at the gold". Now I think I finally get it.

Any advice from others? Should I limit the sprint to the last 200 metres or was this just a bad day? I would like to push myself to my limits (or maybe just a hair beyond); on the other hand I have to be rational about what the limits could be.
