Doc tells me my rowing days are over. Both Hips are torn.I still row but I am taking it easy.A bit of Piriformis syndrome on the right side, but tolerable.Stretching helps.
The Doc suggests that I should bike instead. If I continue to row after my hip repair,he tells me he'll have to replace the hips in a few years! Anybody out there in the same boat? What say you? I'd rather row than bike.

I might sit in the same boat, so I cannot come up with an answer but rather add another aspect to the question:
I also have some arthrosis in the hip joints (too much sport all my life, I guess). I got back on the erg this spring and have trained almost daily until october, putting quite some strain on my body and realizing a 6:40 2k time. In the last weeks of training I ignored some pain in my right hip which went away when warmed-up. Now I am diagnosed with a bursitis trochanterica, which is a bursa inflammation in the outer femur/hip region. Hurts like a bitch and keeps me completely off the erg, right now.
Now: Is rowing/erging known to place stress specifically on the hip region? Is it a question of technique?
Any experiences? Advice?

Amazing simularities.I also have Bursitus Trochanterica of the right hip!
I know the pain! The doctor gave me a cortizone shot, did the trick, but after a few months the pain came back a bit.Now I am on Celebrex and does the job.One time I had stopped taking Celebrex and on the third day got back on it and I've been taking it ever since.
It is common to develop a Cyst on the tear which undoubtly presses against the Siatica hence the numbness of the leg after a 2K row on the water.A MRI of the hip will definitely show it.
As for position and technique there is no going around it.The only thing I can do is just to row nice and easy and forget about improving my times. My racing days are over.
Oh one more thing, where do you wear your wallet.Right back pocket.
The wallet puts excessive pressure at the joint, causes the Bursitis.
Live to row,row to live

Truly amazing, shorttrack!
So we are sufferin' from the same condition: Bursitis trochanterica. It is often seen in patients with hip arthrosis, I have learned. I will get the cortisone treatment shortly and then see how it develops.
Personally, I claim my condition on having used a Johnson Rower instead of a Concept regularly in the last months. The Johnson at the gym I used to train is incredibly hard on the catch. So that might be it (?)
By the way, I never carry a wallet in my back pocket!
