Actually, one thing has changed, and thank heavens for it. What you can't see from the Eakins pictures is that the rowers were "sliding" up and down on a smooth wooden board, with a leather seat on their shorts. It's hard enough these days with a rolling seat, don't you think?
I had read that they used to slide on greased leather shorts. Have you tried it? :D
It's similiar to actual surfboats (not considering the material differences), where you move on "your own" leather on a composite slide...

Thanks for the Eakins link.
BTW I saw Sisley's "Regattas at Molesey" in person in Orsay last week, when I was in Paris (not only) for business.
Probably that's what got me confused about Eakins being a Brit?

Nacho,

I knew of the Sisley because I also had a chance to see it in person. It's telling, I suppose, that with all of the Impressionist masterpieces in the Orsay, including Manet's Déjeuner sur l"Herbe and Renoir's Moulin de la Galette, I spent the most time in front of the Sisley.

Great pictures on this thread!

Here is another Eakins - I wonder if the guy in the background is doing some early form of indoor rowing?

If you are into the Impressionists try and see a copy of the recent BBC Series the Impressionists. 3 * 1 hour. Excellent, based on fact but a lot of artistic license. Bit Torrent could be your friend (and Azereus)
PS Walked miles to find the Picasso Museum and that was very impressive.

Alissa, let me apologize first of all for a mini-hijack of your thread.

Johnyybike, I do like the Impressionists, so I'll keep an eye out for the shows. BBC series sometimes show up here in the US either on PBS or one of the cable channels, especially if they have a joint production arrangement.

Let me make a recommendation in turn. The National Gallery here in Washington just closed a show on Cézanne in Provence. (There was also a documentary on PBS about the exhibit that may be broadcast in the UK.) I made two visits to see the show, and it's well worth going out of your way to see. It's now traveling to a museum in Provence, so if you're in the south of France this summer . . .

Curiously for such a great artist :D Cézanne wasn't into rowing as much as some of his contemporaries. Perhaps the greatest Impressionist work of all (a bit of local chauvinism) has just made its return to the Philips Collection here after several years of travel: Renoir's Déjeuner des Canotiers. Of course it has a rowing theme:

Not at all...I hadn't thought of it as a "hijack" at all...

Everything has had at least a tangential connection to rowing (or at least boating and affiliated activities :) ) and I've been enjoying the images and discussion a lot. For instance, I'm glad to hear that others (johnnybike) have gone out of their way to get to the Picasso museum. It wasn't until I spent an afternoon there that I finally got my eye to "click in" to the Picasso way of seeing and really learned how to appreciate was he was doing. (Very impressed with his work--not so impressed with what they had to tell of his personal life.)

Let's all just keep on enjoying/sharing pictures (whether photographs, drawings, paintings or otherwise!). B)

John, Alissa and the others: you also may walk miles to find the Picasso Museum in Barcelona. If you do so, let me know, it will be a great pleasure to go with you!

As I posted in "On the water" forum...

any pics from you VT folks capturing rowing and fall foliage? I'd love to see that with the reflection on the water. Hope you had a good year for color.
