My college had a Freshman Heayweight 8 with the 5 seat a guy 5'7" or 5'8", about 170. A swimmer, with very wide thick shoulders. Incredible power. The rest of the stern 4 was 6'7", 6'3' and 6'6".
Depends on your power, and rowing efficiency. If you make a HV boat go, they'll want you to stay in it. If they just go by height, start thinking LWT.
Going to lightweight

actually...
I'm doubtful that I have "incredible power," but I'm pretty decent...I'd be in both the heavyweight and lightweight 8's (about half of the HW8 is lightweight)...maybe a four too...and part of the overall goal is to maintain or improve my erg score...we shall see if I can do it, but I figure nothing tried, nothing gained...a day or two ago I dipped below 165 for the first time in about 5 years and my 6k test was only a few seconds off my PR (and i was feelin tired)...so im gettin close....just gonna keep hammerin with the cardio...i suppose the hard part will be maintaining my lightweightness.

update
Well, a couple weeks back I hit 157 pounds (31 pound loss!!) and right now I'm staying just above 160 so that I can drop down when necessary, so the lightweight goal is now complete. Even better, my lightweight PR is a 6:44.8 as of today, which is only 4 seconds above my heavyweight PR, and about 7-8 seconds better than where I was at this point last year.
So I'm feeling pretty good about that.
Next goal: make a summer camp...anyone out there from Penn AC interested in another Sonoma State Mike V?...seriously...and that time's going to keep dropping, cause today felt GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD.
