my feet dont fit!!!

Post by gsedun » October 6th, 2006, 1:16 am

Ok i can not erg very successfully anymore. The problem is my shoes are too wide for the shoe things on the ergs. My sandels iritate me when erging. Ive tried barefoot and the strap loosens off too fast and my foot just slides right out of the shoe thing. So i need help with how to erg....i am size 12 and 4E the length isnt the problem it is the heel of the shoe.

I used to row in an old pair of running shoes which tend to have quit large heals for cushioning but I found a pair of cheap shoes that are basically useless for walking or running out of doors as they are just more like thick socks :D Thats all you need on the erg, and you dont need the straps either unless your rating right up there or racing.

George

ps I really noticed a change of footwear the other day when I had to wear my pair of old runners and found I had to drop the number of holes showing from 3 down to 2 as the shoes pushed my feet that much higher.

We've been trying to keep up with the trend towards wider heels on running shoes. We redesigned the flex foot last year to accomodate this and barefoot use. The new parts are wider in the heel, made of a softer material and do not have as many sharp edges to iritate shoeless feet. They also will accomodate smaller (shorter) feet than the previous design, have been made to allow some side-to-side heel movement and are retrofitable to existing machines. The part number is 1063 and they sell for $475 each. C2JonW

Are they really $475? I hope this is a typo!

That's prety steep pricing, perhaps he should just get the new model Erg that already has them, not to mention a PM4.

Perhaps a decimal was missing; $4.75 each?

Put the strap though the middle hole of the buckle from bottom to top, then back down through the first hole. I have mine this way, have rowed more than 30 million meters barefoot, and the straps never slip.

If that doesn't work for you, slide the strap through the middle hole of the buckle from bottom to top, down through the third hole, back over and down through the first hole. This will probably be unnecessary as the first method works very well.

If the straps rub on the tops of your feet, wrap some duct tape around the straps in that spot. Duct tape eliminates the friction.

You can sand off the sharp edges on the plastic back of the heels with emery paper or sandpaper.

Running shoes would be terrible for rowing, as they have heel lifts and the soles are too soft.

Bowling shoes would be better.

I wear Converse All-Stars - nice and flat without a lot of cushion.

I also bought a pair of Converse All-Stars (hightops, in black, of course)... made me feel just like a kid. My Brooks Beasts had overly-wide heels, as others have noted about different brands. Friends tell me that it's no longer a problem on the models "D" and "E", but my gym has a lone model "C".

Wearing the Converse All-Stars reminds me of the "old days", when the Boston Celtics wore them (in white), and the players were mostly under six-feet tall, and did a lot of bounce-passing.

Wearing Converse Allstars makes me feel kind of like a kid me as well -- except my mother would never buy Converse for us. She considered them to be too expensive.

I got mine because the coach who was running the adult learn to row program told us to buy the cheapest canvas sneakers we could find. The really cheap ones either didn't come in size 11, or were slip on without laces. So I defied his recommendation and got Converse.
