It depends on the piece - if I'm going hard, angry rock is the way to go. However, the one thing that bothers me about music is that my cadence tends to go with the beat, and if I try to fight that tendency and keep a steady cadence regardless of the beat, the mental strain is exhausting and it just feels uncomfortable... could just be me I row steady-state 95% of the time, so feeling calm and comfortable is important to me.
My absolute favorite thing to listen to while I'm rowing, and what I would highly recommend to anyone, is audiobooks (aka books on tape). I download books from Audible.com onto my iPod, hook the iPod to my speakers, and row away. It's great to have your mind engaged and preoccupied with something other than "how much further do I have to go...?"
My two cents.
Row on!

I'm with you, sort of. I don't feel compelled to match my rhythm to the music, but I like to. I've set up an iPod playlist (posted to this other C2 thread) of tunes with the appropriate beats per minute for my preferred spm range.hernan1304 wrote:However, the one thing that bothers me about music is that my cadence tends to go with the beat, and if I try to fight that tendency and keep a steady cadence regardless of the beat, the mental strain is exhausting and it just feels uncomfortable... could just be me

Audiobooks are interesting.
I have listened to only one so far and it was fine, nice to do while rowing nfor distance.
Here are some links to download free audiobooks:

This is awesome John! Thanks very much for posting these sites. Our family reads a lot (we home school and my wife is a librarian.) This will open up a new way to devour books!John Rupp wrote:Audiobooks are interesting.

I always crank out the tunes when rowing. Some of my favorites include: Radiohead, Dave Mathews, Joe Satriani, Little Feat, Nektar,
Roy Buchanon, The String Cheese Incident and The Who.

I tend to like harder music - Billy Squier's 'Stroke' surprisingly fits pretty well. Nothing like something hard and fast for those last 20 strokes.

Re: what is your favorite music to play while you're rowing
I don't listen to music when I row. I used to, but now I watch sports on TV (I've got a rule: If I haven't worked-out, I don't watch TV sports).
Now's the best time-of-year! MLB is about to go into The Pennant Race/World Series, and the NFL is in full-swing (thankfully, the NBA hasn't yet begun).
But music? Eh... whatever they play during commercials is fine.

No music, no tv, maybe a short look if a pretty girl walks by in the gym
