So far, I like shoes w/out "shock-absorbing" padding--I don't need to lose any of my effort to "padding." I wear shoes that look sort of like bowling shoes, but have a very flexible sole, so it is easy to rise up on the toes.

Here's a picture of what I'm wearing now:

What kind of shoes are those, and where did you get them?

They're Paul Green and I got them at a local shop called Sole Comfort, but I also saw them at Nordstrom's.

I wear a pair of Merrell Sprint Blast shoes. I love Merrells. These kinda look like rock climbing/light weight running shoes. I havent really been rowing long but I tried a couple of other pairs of shoes and found some of the others wear blisters in the back of my heels. These Merrells are really low cut so that may help with movement around the ankle area.[/img]

when i row in shoes, i am bothered by lack of flex in the soles; i cant lift my heels up as much as i would like.

when i row in sox my ankles chafe and blister.

i now keep an old pair of shoes strapped in the plates, very loosely laced.
insert feet; row.
heels lift up fine, in and out; no chafing.

For 7 years I used a variety of running shoes with greater and lesser satisfaction. To me the cushioning didn't seem excessively cushy, but I wasn't racing on the erg.

Then, starting in 2003, I began _running_ long distance (marathon) and also began rowing BAREFOOT. Probably started as a whim, but I ended up liking it and remarkably didn't have _any_ serious chafing problems.

I find that rowing barefoot helps strengthen and stretch the muscles in my feet, critical for helping to avoid the common running injury Plantar Fasciata. Wearing shoes, the muscles would just cramp. Barefooted I'm also more in touch with the erg, which I like.

These days, I row only to x-train for my running, rarely more than 3x/week with distances ranging from 5,000m (2x/wk) to 10,000 (1x/wk) and now and then a 15k, but I always do it barefoot.

FWIW, I suspect Nike's "Free" (very flexible) running x-trainers may have the flex we're looking for, but I've never tried them.

Barefoot: Corns on Heels?

Post by rah » November 24th, 2006, 12:45 am

I'd like to row barefoot, but I've got this corn on the back of one heel, which makes it annoying. Anyone have the problem? What do you do about it?

See the web site below, click on Swing Sling, and you will find what you need, at least to help alleviate one annoyance. B)

Actually, big fluffy socks seem to be doing the trick, but I'm getting materials together to try the swing sling thing, too. Thanks, much.
