I am a new kid just starting out, less than a week on my C2D.

Distance/meter per stroke seems to me to be the key, yes?

I realize that at the beginning I should probably not put too much emphasis on any one aspect of rowing but I am curious. I am averaging 5.7-6 meters PS. This is at SPM 20-26. I'm thinking SPM does not have that much effective on MPS, at least at lower stroke rates? I *believe* my form is decent for my experience. So, how does one increase the MPS, other than experience?

Your meters and distance per stroke are fine.

More important are your meters or distance per second, i.e. mps/dps.

Bob,

You'll, mostly, want to ignore everything that Rupp ever writes on here (he's clearly due for his medication again). I have him on ignore on here and on the UK forum.

Most folks don't worry, too much, about distance per stroke. They concern themselves more with duration, pace (time taken to row 500m) and stroke rate.

Feed those three values into http://www.machars.net/spi.php#dps and it will calculate the average distance per stroke.

I was rowing with my friend Gordon - he's 73 (same age as my father) and got 5401m done in 30minutes @ 27SPM (this was his second row after years away from rowing. On Monday he did 5596m in 30' @27SPM). That calculates to around 6.8m/stroke.

He's doing the rowing as cross training for the Great North Run half marathon on 1st Oct 2006. His target time for that is sub 3hrs.

On the other hand, there is a training technique which uses strapless rowing at 10m per stroke as a technique for improving the things Dougie (Citroen) mentioned. You can search S10PS (the abreviation used by those who use that technique--it think it stands for Strapless, 10m Per Stroke) to find posts about that.
