... going to sleep

Post by PingPong » September 3rd, 2006, 8:27 pm

Recently while erging, I felt like my penis was starting to go to sleep. Rather than finish my 30 minute piece, and see of it was really going to sleep, I stopped right away, and haven't felt like erging since.

Anybody else have this problem?

Any suggestings to avoid it in the future?

How old are you? Are you in shape? Are you overweight? Most likely, you are sitting in some odd way and compressing the relevant nerves. Does this happen with other types of exercise?

Mid 40s. Slightly overweight, but 25 lbs less than a year ago. I had a similar problem a few times in the past, but I can't remember the circumstances. May or may not have been during exercise.

I erg, row on the water and bicycle. My butt frequently hurts after a long row, and my right leg sometimes gets a little numb. No problems with cycling.

my concern

is that you may have some sort of narrowing of the penile artery, possibly related to cycling or similar, and rowing may somehow be exacerbating this. the long term danger is impotence, which i assume you would prefer avoiding. i would suggest holding off on the rowing for the time being, and seeing a urologist, just to make sure that everything is ok. i would also mention the buttock pain- there is a form of claudication (pain related to arterial insufficiency) that presents in the buttock. get yourself checked out.

If you change your pants it might help - get some tight strap like parts to hold the soft parts between your legs a bit up a bit, preventing the weight to pull your testicles and bony captain down - off the seat punshing on to the top of the seat - that might help you and assure relief from numbness.

Well, it got worse and now it seems to be getting better. I see my doctor on Monday.

A week ago I took out a boat that I don't usually use. The seat was very uncomfortable. Later that day I started getting really sore between my legs. Is that called the perineum? Lasted all week. It would get better overnight and progressively worse during the day. This morning, I felt okay, so I very cautiously went out in my regular boat, and put some padding on the seat - leaving a space in the middle where to minimize pressure on the perineum region. And it was fine. And being Saturday, I spent as much time during the rest of the day standing or reclining instead of sitting in an office chair. The pain is mostly gone.

I have heard about this problem for cyclists. But never related to rowing.

We'll see what the doctor says on Monday.
