There is no screening process for forum users. Anyone can sign on, post one message that may or may not get a few clicks from members, and just move on to troll another large group.

Notice that they are all just one message posters. I wouldn't call them nuts, just unethical entrepeneurs. If they hit a number of large groups, all they need is just a small percent of response from the memberships to make their profits. Their expenses are almost nil - just the time spent sending out their mass mailings.

The sad part of it is that they are unlikely to ever check back on the forums that they violate. All they need is a few clicks on the URLs they list. There is always some chance that the URL clicker is a potential buyer - probably of videos. They will never see the posted responses of the forum members expressing their outrage about the invasion of their forum. The sarcasm of "And your 2k time is?" will be forever lost on them. If a legitimate member's response has therapeutic value for the member, I suppose that it is worthwhile, but it must be frustrating to realize that the intended target will never see it.

Bob:

It is sad that there is no reasonable way to prevent this type of post, but I believe the "And your 2K time would be?" response is now more of a game to be played to (sarcastically) condemn the original poster for encroaching on a forum designed for sharing information on rowing and erging.

Mark,

Yes, I have observed that, on the UK forum, it seems to have developed into a competition to be the first one to send it in after such a spam attack. In a sense it is sort of a case of making lemonade if some one hands you a lemon.

I am not personally bothered by the spammers promoting drugs (usually viagra or phony weight loss gimmicks) and porn videos. They are easy enough to spot and avoid, but the big concern is the fact that there are a lot of juniors in our group and it is disturbing to realize that some of them might get sucked into these schemes. Of course, this sort of crap is rampant throughout the internet, so it is not surprising the a small amount of it creeps into our little corner once in a while. The only group I belong to that doesn't have this problem has a very vigilant moderator and it takes a lot of time and effort on his part to screen it out.

These are one-off posts - we've introduced a number of measures to deter them, and have one or two more we might implement, but I'm afraid there will always be some that get through so I just delete them.

Incidentally, the 'And your 2k time is?' thing doesn't help - for some reason a search for that doesn't show anything (for me at least), so it doesn't help to find them, and when I do find them I have more to delete (this time I thought I'd leave the rest of the thread up). No answer at all would probably make them easier to find, as I can easily search for posts with no answers.

And just to answer a possible question, this is to the best of my knowledge the only time that posts are deleted, though management reserves the right, etc.

Paul,

I hope that you didn't regard my message as a criticism. Overall, I think that the forum is well managed and I appreciate the opportunity to participate in it. I didn't realize that you did have some methods for warding off part of the spam. Knowing that now, I hate to think about what it might be like if you were not doing that. I hope that I am not making it more of a problem by making contributions to the thread, but I think that it did need an airing out.

Bob - No worries at all, I didn't take it as criticism, and all the points you make are fair and valid. Unfortunately it seems that there's a trade-off between having an open forum and a spam-free one, and the line between them is too narrow to tread reliably :)

Cheers, Paul
