What do you mean going to start to hurt, it already does!

John's 30 minute PB is less than 100m more than mine, so hopefully you may be right Francois. I'm sure we'll all push each other to greater distances than we thought possible. My goal is 8K but we'll see if July is when it will happen.

Great job on the 1k Dave!!! I feel like some kind of evil villian  who is being chased down by the RCMP ("we always get our man!" ) I'm hoping to try the 30 minute thing on Saturday. Maybe if the energy is there I might be able to lead you on a merry chase :D . But I figure that if I do it early in the month, maybe I could be in the first boat for a little while. I'm going to try to get over 8k too and hopefully a few metres more. I'm not sure what strategy to go with, probably with some negative splits so that I can hold off the pain as long as possible! Good luck to everyone on the challenge. John

John, I was just kidding about getting my revenge! I am always happy if someone in our team is faster! :D

Regarding the 30 min, the strategy is not much different than for a 10K. To break 8000m, one could start at 1:53.5 and increase the pace by 0.5 sec every six minutes: 1:53.5, 1:53.0, 1:52.5, 1:52, 1:51.5.

I find it somewhat depressing to look at the remaining time on the display during a 30 or 60 min time trial. What I find helpful is to look at the projected distance instead (as well as pace and SR). I try to keep those projected distances constant during each interval; this is much more precise than simply looking at the pace, which is displayed in whole numbers.
Here is a little table that shows the resulting projected distance as the pace increases:

pace ----- time spent at that pace ---- projected
1:53.5 ----------- 6:00 ------------------- 7929 m
1:53.0 ----------- 6:00 ------------------- 7958 m
1:52.5 ----------- 6:00 ------------------- 7979 m
1:52.0 ----------- 6:00 ------------------- 7993 m
1:51.5 ----------- 6:00 ------------------- 8000 m

As you can see in the table, 8000m will only appear on the display in the last 6 minutes. It is important to avoid prematurely increasing the pace just because you desperately want to see 8000 m on the screen!

I've got this strange vision of a Mountie on an erg. Odd, very odd. :?
Well I thought I'd get the 2K improved a bit as it was lagging behind in the Nonathlon standings. I really dislike those sprints and getting sub-7 was a goal reached, but again one that I'm not in any hurry to improve on. I'm going to concentrate on the endurance events for a while, get my weight down a bit and my fitness up.

Trying to catch the guy on the stationary biycle just in front of him? That's the version of the vision I saw when I read that.

I really appreciate how the support and and advice from all of you, plus the incentive of the cTc challenge, have driven me on to greater and greater (well let's be honest, in my case less and less mediocre) results.

I too will be joining the posse and chasing boat 1 and ,by default, John. I did much better than I expected on the 1K so who knows.

If I could only figuire out how to beat those people in MAD and OARSOME. Should we check to see if they are not trained orangutans or chimpanzees?

Welcome back to the Brian T. He has just made a big splash in the water and put us on shore in Indonesia. I am sure it was not a 200,000 row all at once. It is the little rows that add up. Every meter counts in this round the world row gig. So keep motivated and keep entering those meters.

We blasted through the city state of Singapore http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/fac ... os/sn.html

and we are now into the Indonesian archipelago. http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/fac ... os/sn.html
The present island we are on is Sumatra.
I have never been, but it looks fascinating.

Keep on rowin', eh.

21,000,000 meters! and we are 37.84% of the way around the world.

Happy Canada Day, eh.

Happy Canada Day EH! TEAM

I wanted to be the first one in the boat for the July challenge, but I see Brigette hopped in first. Kick gently, whoever boots me to the next boat. Here's a few pics from the Canada Day parade in Fonthill, Ontario.

Oooh, nice avatar, Brigitte. I bet you could take off at least a few seconds off your 500m pace if you just had a bucket with which to occasionally empty the boat.

Jim, I'm glad that you could restore the database! I would promise to never do it again, if I only knew how I managed to mess it up ...

Michele, seems like it is up to us women to row the ctc boat!?! Maybe the men are too shy to join us!  Those are nice pictures from the parade, and I hope you all had a great National Day in Canada!

Dan, you mean ... you mean ... the water is supposed to be outside the boat??? Why didn't anybody tell me before? No wonder I couldn't get a hold on that evil 1K! Anyway I could improve my 30 minutes for the ctc by 12 meters. :D Let's see how far I can push it this month. The picture was from some kind of cigar box ... and although it's a bit old-fashioned I somehow liked it.

I'm proud that I could almost double my rowing last month compared to the months before, and so had a nice lazy day today.

Happy Rowing everyone!
Brigitte

Brigitte, great job to get another 12 metres for 30:00 when your PB was already really good. I see that you got over 900 for that one on nonathlon! :D

Michelle, great to see that you got right in there and cranked out a 30:00 row for the team, too! We need some guys to join us now!! John gave it a try on Saturday, but handled down. I think he started too fast, but live and learn, he'll get it worked out for next time, I'll bet!

I got a PB by 210 metres for my attempt, still not enough to beat Brigitte, but what else is new?!

Shannon, congratulations on that huge improvement! Wow - 210 metres!!!
And with that you beat me on the Nonathlon, or actually you beat me on all distances on the Nonathlon except one. So don't be so modest ... I see an aspiring collector of 900's here (while I just made a measly single one!   ). I also wonder when the guys will join us .... maybe we will end up like this:

Congratulations Michelle, Shannon and Brigitte for your PBs and for being the first in boat #1! I am sure many (all?) men are eager to join you!

I am not sure when I will do it, since I am still recovering from a long swim meet we had Saturday in Montreal (just one PB this time). Maybe I should just wait for John to see what is the distance to beat! :D

I have received the slides I had ordered and was hoping they would make me faster, but unfortunately that is not the case! :(
