slides?
This thought just occurred to me ...
Is there anyone out there that bought slides and does NOT like them?
Is there anyone out there with slides that does NOT feel they are fun?
I have never met anyone who will answer YES to either question, so from a marketing perspective slides are a winner.

I bought a set and sold them to FB2. I wouldn't say i didn't like them, i just felt that my training without them was more productive! This thought just occurred to me ...

Did you do any informal study to verify this ... heart rate or anything like that? I may try a week or two of set pieces at set pace(s) on and off the slides, just to see how they compare. Another way to change up the workout plan and add some variety.FB1 wrote:

As long as you are addressing this, wouldn't it be more accurate to say that you "could work a lot oftener"? It is quite easy to demonstrate that you are not producing any more work during the drive, though since more drives are being accomplished in a given time the Avg flywheel RPM's go up and the same work results in more power, which is reflected in the displayed pace. If you did the things that you do during a 100m sprint for a longer piece, you would quickly find that your "benefit" is rather short-lived, as once you must begin relying on aerobic energy production to sustain an effort there is little to no difference that can be accounted for. Anyway, even for the 100m sprint, as long as technique can be maintained, without getting too sloppy (which is admittedly difficult), there would be no difference there either. In fact if the Erg were not fixed to the floor fairly well it would probably end up moving around a bit.jamesg wrote:As to whether slides are faster, the question is put wrongly. The question should be, can I go faster on the slides? There are two possible answers: yes if they remove a limitation to putting work into the handle, and yes if they let me save "non-productive" power (in shuttling up and down for example) and put this work saved into the handle.
I've seen the first, and it's very easy: just do a set of flat out 100m pulls, on and off the slides. It was immediately obvious that some limitations disappear on slides, and I could work a lot harder.

Thanks for your input. This is the same that I've found with the slides.
All the best with your rowing.

Very informal, i do alot of my C2 training at lower rates 18-24 and often strapless. To maintain the same power output i needed to up the rate.Did you do any informal study to verify this ... heart rate or anything like that? The slides are very comfortable for the longer pieces, however i do all of that OW.

This photos shows the rubber strips that I reverse taped to the front end of each slide. These insure that the slides are level. The front side is 1 inch lower than the back one but that doesn't seem to make any difference as to keeping in the middle and not banging the ends.

Mark,
This is probably a coincidence, but the garage opening faces true north.
The slides and erg are set up at an angle, towards the best view, and this happens to be facing directly towards magnetic north.

I was just joking about this John, as you seem to design lots of enhancements and features, which I feel is cool ... like Byron, who's also engineered all sorts of neat things.John Rupp wrote:Mark,

But, this north facing garage thing, now that's kinda scary!

First of all, a comment about my misspelling: It was not a typo. I had the thought at the time that something was wrong, but I didn’t pick up on it. Since censor and censure have a sort of subtle relationship in that a lack of censoring could lead to an application of censure, it might have been a “sreudian flip.”PaulS wrote:Please, don't keep us in the dark. My message was a response to the exchange between Mark and John about geographical alignment of ergs. (Matthew and Luke seem to have sat this one out.) I wrote something to the effect that apparently my erg area does not have the proper Feng Shui which might help to account for my lousy short distance (under 5k) times here at home.
As an alternative I considered the possibility that I was not doing them at the right phase of the moon.

Slides
I use slides a lot with my erg. I find that the motion is more similar to that of a boat and the motion is easier on my back. I can increase my erg scores by 1 second over 500 meters by using the slides. It doesn't matter if it is 500m or a marathon. However, I have not heard of any other person having a similar increase in erg performance. It probably has something to do with a quirk in my stroke.
Cheers,
Paul Flack
