Summer Solstice--I Need a Poultice!

Post by Little Rowing Turtle » June 21st, 2006, 8:22 pm

I quickly scanned the Summer Solstice Honor Board awhile ago and was happy to see that four other UNM stalwarts (John C: Is that something horses get?) have joined me in the pursuit of pain in its purest form: (1) Jennifer Barrick; (2) Gary Erdos; (3) Dennis Kline and (4)Dave Smith. Congratulations, all! Update: (5) Tom Barrick; (6) Rick Fahle; (7) Patricia Gallagher and (8) Jim Kathios !

All in Due Time

Post by rfahle » June 21st, 2006, 9:52 pm

Little Rowing Turtle:

I'll be there to join you for the Solstice Splash in an hour or so, I helped clean the basement making room for the new Bowflex that I'll likely assemble after returning from Chicago Thursday night.

Row Go Fast (RGF)

June 22 Update: Bowflex is still safely in its boxes (all eight of them) as flights home from Chicago were a mess. The good news is that I got home (Buffalo) before my sales call partner even left Chicago to return to Dallas.

June 24 Update: Bowflex has been assembled and fits nicely in the basement next to the erg. I only have one blister on my palm from twisting the screws, nuts and bolts and other parts into the Bowflex. The erg gets to keep its front row priority with the TV, DVD and the C-Breeze making summer rowing more tolerable. Hopefully, I can trade a few more calories for a little more muscle tone. The kids still think I look sickly (ya know what happens to sickly barn cats!) as I've lost 30+ lbs since they were home last summer. Maybe Popeye's spinich will help!

I'm right there with you, Rick. I'm 27K done for the day, so have the SS piece. Going for another two hours or more(with breaks) to see what I can do. If I can ingest enough calories between, I may go for 3 SS's to clear 2MM. Anyway, have fun on that Bowflex, but don't forget the machine that got you here!

Summer Solstice Complete

Post by rfahle » June 22nd, 2006, 1:22 am

Tom. Bonnie and Teammates:

The Summer Solstice Challenge is complete on the east coast, I completed my final 10k about 11:00pm tonight (goes with 1k + 10k this morning).

I feel so mortal and not highly trained as the next name on the Summer Solstice Challenge Honor Board is none other than "Nigel the Superrower". I can only hope that 1) I live to be 68 years old, 2) live that long with my health and 3) live that long healthy and willing to spend 6 hours a day on my erg to row 2 full marathons each day! Todays listing says he rowed 84,389 meters. WOW!

I've enjoyed working with everyone on the message board and I hope that over the next week, we will continue to grow our readership.

I leave in about 4 hours to go to Chicago, I guess it's time for a shower and to bed.

re: Nigel Ferris and a bunch of meters

Nigel is a slight aberration of nature. I may be the only person alive who believes he's actually rowing that much, but only because I also believe he keeps his splits around a 2:30 and has more time on his hands than most. No way that guy has a full time job, a newly wed, *and* is doing 70-100K in a day. I still think he's recently retired and has 18 hours to do whatever he wants with. No worries on keeping up with him, it just won't happen. Not even Dwayne Adams would bother.

Saw that you got your SS piece in kinda under the wire there, Rick! I finished mine at 10:15 PM PT. Won't be doing it again for a long time. I had a 3.5K in place from this morning, and then began at 5PM with a 20K, added on an extra 3.5K before taking a break. Went back at it with a 21.5K, and then finished with a 15K after another break. 4000 calories burned, so I'm pretty much still seeing stars after somewhat replenishing. May take the 22nd off.

Enjoy Chicago and the tons of sleep you'll be getting beforehand.

Fellow Rowbos:

Sorry for the failure to make the 2006 Solstice Row: tied up in airports all day. But to try to make up for it, instead of 21000m on the 21st, I rowed 22000m on the 22nd...does that work? Gonna try the 1000 again here in Michigan: about 4000 feet lower in elevation and rich...RICH... in oxygen! We'll see how my time compares with the "elevational adjustment."

I like all these weight, age, and elevation adjustments. Problem is, I'm older (54 and counting), heavier (missed 5 days of rowing), and living at high elevation, so: Is it real? I used to run the River Road Run each year in Baton Rouge: a nice 10K at about 100ft elevation. Felt like and oxygen drunk after sucking the few molecules out of Albuquerque's air. Now that was real. But adjusting time? Heck, I ran my best marathon in Albuquerque. There's more than just the air.

Much thanks for setting this up. I'm now trying to get both of my brothers, both PhD biologists like me, to join the Rowbos. Mark (at LSU) has finally bought a C2 (loves it), so I'll get him on board soon. John (Occidental College) is considering the C2.

Hasn't this 1000m challenge thing gone on a long time? When does it change? And the larger question, for me: when is somebody gonna boot me from the #1 boat? I can feel those hot breaths...

Saludos, Amigos!

Gee, Dave, I don't know--22,000 on the 22nd? Let me poll the crew--Survey says: "Works for us" !

It does seem like the 1000m cross-team challenge has dragged on, doesn't it? Wonder what fiendish, lung-punishing plot they're hatching for July?

Three Row-bios, huh? Awesome!

Sorry I missed out on the solstice row. Stuck doing a 12-hr shift with 90 minutes of driving for a near 14-hr day.
What is the link for the Cross team challenge?
Looks like Dave is issuing a challenge to all other Rowbos. I'll echo it...who wants to kick out a skinny little lightweight like me from boat #1? I need some motivation to try to beat my last time.

Rick,

It just takes a little BBCode, which is very similar to HTML. Here's the link:

Tom:

So BBCode is really HTML-lite and it is used only on bulletin boards? How'd I do below with the Nonathlon Link?

Tom:

I thought you would like to know that Nigel Ferris e-mailed me today with the following note. I believe that it confirms your thoughts about split times and multiple events per day. With your permission, I will forward your message (above) to Nigel as we likely have a friend who simply enjoys rowing.

Rick

Dear Mr Fahle,

I have read what you had to say about me on the Concept2 Training Forum and thought you ought to know that I will 69 in August.I am getting Dena to put a photo of me in the car I use for my full time business in my profile. Please note that I am available in my job for 24 hours and 7 days a week so I find it very easy to find 6 hours to do some rowing. Plus as I have an age gene in me it helps. I have been involved in some sort of sport since I was a kid. I rowed on water from the age of 21 to 40, then did jogging and running and half marathons, then went on to Concept 2 from Feb 1st 2006. Yes on 21st June I rowed at different times from 4am to 10.45pm = 18hours and 45mins and I managed to clock up 84,389meters. I row when most people are watching the TV. I have actually done one afternoon and in to the late evening ten 5ks = 50,000 meters at 22- 23 mins per 5k fter having done in the morning starting early a further 50k made up of a number of 30 and 60 min rows = 6,450 and 12,700 each. You see I break up my rows I dont do long rows like you guys. I have done a few half marathons and I intend soon to have a go at a 100k with breaks for stretching, drink and towelling down. I will probabaly ened up with 80k. Anyway Mr Fahle I have tried emailing Tom or Major Tom as Bruce Turtle calls him but my email could not get through to tell him a few facts about myself before he starts writing about me. Yours sincerely Nigel Ferris

He's a madman! I e-mailed him a few weeks ago to let him know that he's not just crushing the younger guys in meters, he's utterly demoralizing us. :o Anyway, hope there are no hard feelings with people questioning his meter production. It's just the way it is when you put up those kinds of numbers. If anything, it's a compliment.
