Sounds like a country training plan. That's a great attitude to look at all the hard work that country living provides as part of a training routine. I try to think of it that way myself, but sometimes the amount of work is overwhelming .My training plan for this month has been rowing during the week then clearing fence lines by hand using an axe, pulaski tool, fourteen pound fence post mallet and hand auger. This is my cross training program, I train during the week then get cross on the weekend. Interspersed with the fencing has been wrestling 1000 sheep and digging trucks out of mud bogs. An unorthodox plan, we will see how it works.

p.s. Michelle, I really like the team emblem that you created. Did anyone ever give you the info. on who to contact at the CTC? I know his name is Darren. Others could probably give you more information. I'd be glad to help out once I get back, if needed.

Have fun camping and good luck in the bike relay. The weather over here has been spectacular. I think we have been the hottest place in the country for the past few days, and not a cloud in the sky. Yellowknife in the summer time -> best kept secret in Canada.

Have fun on your vacation and enjoy the bike race. If it's a road race at least you can spend hours talking to your fellow competitors.
I'd like to take our family out west sometime. Mapquest says it's only about 5200 km from our place to Yellowknife!! I 've read that there are some great rivers to paddle down as well.

Thanks John, Jim and Kirk! I was really pleased to finally break 8:30 on 2K. I got 8:28.4. I finally did my first 2K where I didn't fly and die and it made a big difference. I have been loosely following the Interactive Plan from the UK site and so far I have taken 4.1 seconds off my 2K time with hopefully lots more improvements to come!

Seriously we've got some really nice country around here, but I am biased because I have only been to Yellowknife in the dead of winter, so I was not seeing it as it's best. I'll bet you've got some pretty fierce mosquitoes there Jim! We have our share here, but luckily the mosquitoes just love John, so they swarm around him and I am home free!!

It good to read of all your goals, reaching and then exceeding them. Its a great motivator.
You know how on some days it can be a struggle to get yourself in that frame of mind, that zone needed for a really good row; and on others you're just raring to get on the machine because you know its going to be a good one?
Well today was the latter for me. I normally work from mid-afternoon to midnight and long rows in the morning don't really cut it, so I have to save them for my days off. Well I was off today and was determined to get some meaningful metres in to add to the round-the-world cause.
A few weeks ago, I set myself the target of 15K in the hour. It seemed like it was a long way off as my previous best was 14294, but today I made it! 15011 metres. I couldn't believe it. The feeling that my chest was about to explode was tempered by the euphoria of reaching this goal after only 8 weeks with my C2. I went through 30 minutes at 7565 so I knew I was going to be close. 10K went by in 39-48 which is 10 seconds better than my best time for that distance. Shame I can't log that one too!

The way I see it (IMHO) if you rowed through 10 k in a given time, you can claim that given time. You did the piece. Just row 10 k tomorrow, or at your convenience, and put your pb in for the time. Claim it now and enjoy your accomplishment!

Well I managed to get the 1K done this afternoon. I may have a second go later this month as I may be able to squeak out one or two seconds more (or not!). I did a 5k warm up with 1 minute 30 second long intervals at 5, 10 and 15 minutes at my estimated race pace of 1:47, then a 2 minute slow row. I waited 5 minutes while drinking about 250 ml of juice, then set out. Initially I rowed at 1:47 split at 30 spm and felt very good for the first 500 , then anoxia began to set in. At 200 m to go, I went flat out until the end raising the tempo to 35 spm and 1:35 split
Maybe I could start flat out just a few metres earlier as I was not completely dead by the end. I kind of wonder about the initial tempo too.
Thank to everyone for the support and advice, it's like having my own coach and cheering section.

My computer has been giving me the gears as has my internet connection. New computer coming Monday. So, I see I've missed alot! I can't read through all the messages and then actually remember everything. lol Congrats to all who have rowed PB's or achieved goals in their rowing and their lives! I'm still raring to go and training, but this week was extremely busy at work which kind of zapped my energy.
I haven't received any help regarding who makes the decision to use the logo that I created with everyone's input, or who needs to be contacted to put in on the CTC site or the Around the World Row site. So, until I hear I'll keep using it in my messages because I like it and I even ironed on transfers on a couple T-shirts for motivation at the YMCA.
I'm not yet energetic enough to participate in the Summer Solstice Row, but Good Luck to all that are up to the challenge!

Great effort Trevor! I'm sure you could knock a couple of seconds off your time. If you're not "completely dead" you're not trying!
I find pacing the most difficult aspect of this. I nearly always start out too fast and suffer for it in the third quarter (take a rest!) and then push again at the end.
This was true today. After my 60 minute piece the other day, I was determined to get a good 10K in too. I'd planned to start at 1.57 and for the first 6K was right there but from there until 8500 I was labouring and slid back to about 2.00. A push in the last 500 got me there in 39.08.6. There was nothing left in the tank though.
Maybe last night's works BBQ caught up with me! I think I'll take 2 days off before the Solstice Challenge on Wednesday. See you there!

Next time try to match this effort's average pace until your sprint, that should get you sub 3:30 or better.

Aha! A challenge! So if you better my time Kirk, I will be forced to defend my honour. Now, if I could only think of some way to displace one of those people in boat one. ( I mean short of rowing really really hard).
Dave you seem to go from strength to strength. Amazing to drop almost a minute off your 10K time.
I suppose I will have to attempt the half marathon on Wednesday. So far my greatest distance is 16K . Any tips on pacing?

I don't know whether its strength to strength, more I'm just starting out so still pushing the limits of my ability and becoming fitter. The time will surely come and probably soon that my PBs will be much closer to the previous value and there will be days that I won't get near them. That will probably cause some diappointment but I know that its inevitable. Nobody beats their best every time they row.
As for pacing a HM I'm no expert having done only two, but I just took my pace for my 60min previous and added 4 sec/500m. I was rowing at about 2.10 for my first one and 2.06 for the second one. I find that I'm very comfortable at 2.05-6 and can go for longer than my butt can! Hopefully the iminent arrival of my gel seat will aid in that. I got off the rower 3 times during my first HM due to discomfort but stayed on for the whole time in the second.
