Don't be so sure. I thought I couldn't do better than 3:20, but I cranked the drag up from my usual 112 to 137 and pulled a 3:17.7. I was so astonished by the ease of holding a faster than expected pace that my pacing was all over the map (2nd 200m was much too fast), and expect that I'll be able to improve on it next time I try simply by doing a better pacing job.

Yeah, I know, I'm helping the enemy, but at least you'll make my buddy YJ work a little harder :)

Thanks a lot Bill :x Actually, I would enjoy seeing Francois zip by me. But I'm not so sure that I could work any harder :? . I'm very impressed by your 1k Bill. I don't think I'll get near you, but since you think we might be the enemy, I may have to try :D. Actually, you are such a great person and you have way too many people on your team so I think you should jump ship and help us row around the world. Just think, you could virtually immigrate to a kinder, gentler nation, travel, the list for reasons why is just too long :D.

Did my 1K in 3:33.1. My first 1K, so a PB by default.
Sorry Michelle, I'm afraid I knocked you into Boat 3, but I'm sure you'll have company soon. We still have more rowers on deck.
Kirk, I see I came close to your time. I was actually shooting for 1:45. I thought that might be a reasonable goal for me. I thought wrong. Unlike some of the smarter rowers on the team, I was tending to slow down toward the end because I overestimated myself. Well, next time I'll have a previous 1K time as my guide instead of trying to guess from my 5K (the previous CTC challenge).

For those to like to hear some more details: I did a 10 min of warmup. For the 1K, I set the damper level at 5. I started pulling a little slower than 1:45, with 1:45 being my goal. My stroke rate was around 28. But I realized half way through that I overestimated what I was going to be able to do today. I tried to hold on as best I could, trying to save a little for the end - it was very little. After it was over, although I felt a little tired, I felt fine after about 2 minutes. Since I was a little disappointed and was feeling somewhat recovered, I thought I'd wait 15 minutes and give it another go - this time starting out a little slower, and maybe shoot for a 1:46 pace. No magic happened - I was just slower - but I had to try.

No plans to try again this month - we'll be heading on vacation next week.
Hope I moved Boat 2 up a notch. I forgot to take notice our placings before I rowed.

Okay, we need 4 more rowers now.

Excellent row, Dan. Congratulations.

It's those meters from 400-700 that I find hard in the 1k.

Have fun on your vacation. I hope you get a chance to relax.

Keep on rowin', eh.

A "Welcome to the team eh" to David & a "Welcome back to the team eh" to Scott.

Some great efforts from the CTC bunch as well. Happy PB's for Shannon, Krystyna, Jim, Dan & Chris.
I was beside Krystyna and there wasn't much left to give!

I see Mark has put a strong row in and rearranged most of us. All the boats are moving along nicely.

Cheers eh,

Super row Mark.

What was your strategy? Was it a PB?
Did you increase the drag? ....?

Keep on rowin', eh.

Thanks for the welcome!
Just a bit about myself:
I'm 39 and have been rowing since April 13 2006. I've already lost 12 pounds and am enjoying it tremendously. I enjoy long rows and have already completed 2 half marathons in preparation for the Solstice row. Its great to be able to contribute my metres to the team.
Happy paddling

Welcome aboard David! Eeekkk, I bet I'll get bumped to a fourth boat soon. Maybe that's my role - let's see how many boats Michelle can be first in and first out! lol
Happy Rowing!

Great row by David C at the C2C challenge! Nicely done.

David has knocked me back into Boat II. We still need one more person to fill up boat III. I will work on Little Linda.

Keep on rowin', eh.

I plan to take a crack at the 1 km this weekend. My rough plan (never having done a sprint before) is to warm up with for 5 km with one minute sessions at race speed at five minute intervals then start out at 10 seconds faster than my average for the 5 km, which would be, if memory serves, 1:47. At some point, probably the last 200 m, if there is any gas left in the tank just throw caution to the wind and go flat out.

Does this sound like a plan for success or certain death?

My training plan for this month has been rowing during the week then clearing fence lines by hand using an axe, pulaski tool, fourteen pound fence post mallet and hand auger. This is my cross training program, I train during the week then get cross on the weekend. Interspersed with the fencing has been wrestling 1000 sheep and digging trucks out of mud bogs. An unorthodox plan, we will see how it works.
