Why not, Owen? If you're "beaten" someone else did it...and it's therefore out of your control (that's why it's no big deal--not pleasant, but no big deal). If you "lose," it's something you did...and therefore within your control. So control it. (Make sure if you don't win, it's because you were beaten--as in, did you absolute best.)

Win if you can, if you're beaten, ok, but don't lose.

I just hate the idea of being beaten by anyone, as techincally it is always in my control as i can always train better, push harder and stay one step ahead of the competition.

I read a quote the other day; "Sometimes doing our best is not enough, sometimes we must do what is nessecary"

I know, much like anyone else, that sometimes "shit happens" (pardon the expression) but to me being beaten, no matter who by or no matter how good they are, will always be a big deal, this is not just in rowing but in every other aspect of my life.

He knows that slides are 3 seconds per 500m faster for a 250 pound guy.

And they obviously don't make any difference to the length of the stroke, as this is determined by one's style and body mechanics.

Then you had better prepare to be in a near constant state of whatever "being beaten" causes for you. I really like to make sure I do the best I possibly can in all of my chosen activities, sometimes that turns out to be the best anyone has ever done, sometimes the best that others have done serves to mark the goal, though my goals will never be limitted to the best that someone else has done.

Another of my favorites:
Compete only with yourself, and eventually you will be the only competition remaining.

With both these things in mind a person can easily remain a humble winner.

There was a bumper sticker that I thought quite funny:
"It's not about whether you win or lose,
It's about whether I win or lose!"

I've enjoyed your dogged pursuit of this issue as much as anyone. And still I wonder: so fucking what?

I suppose that sounds flip, but the question is sincere. (Flip is my resting state.)

What should he say? You don,t care and he does. I think you row just for fun and he erges for his times.
Almost all good ergers care and the more average ones care much less. Do you erg to get the best out of you and compete or is it something else?

If I knew what he should say, I wouldn't need to ask the question. Assuming you're talking about caring whether DA's times are legit, I'm not sure that "almost all good ergers care." But I fit your mold—pretty average on the erg, and I can't imagine caring as much as Chad does about DA. In fact, it's precisely because I don't share Chad's fervor for the Straight Dope on Dwayne that I wonder what drives it. (I'm well above average when it comes to curiosity).

I erg for two main reasons:

1) Rowing is one of the uncommon pursuits in which intense physical effort and fluid, rhythmic grace not only coexist, but ultimately work together for the best result. I think that's cool.

Fast railing on a sportbike is another of those pursuits, which leads to my next reason:

2) So I'm better able to hang off my bike in the turns.

So I erg to get the best out of me. And I don't erg to compete.

Can't we all just communicate effectively and distinctly while all getting along and exhibiting our tolerance and acceptance of each other's behaviors whether or not you think we're in the mainstream of society you silly bugger.

Bugger?

John Stuart Mill, of his own free will,
On half a pint of shandy was particularly ill.

Plato, they say, could stick it away--
Half a crate of whiskey every day.

Aristotle, Aristotle was a bugger for the bottle.
Hobbes was fond of his dram,

And Ren Descartes was a drunken fart.
'I drink, therefore I am.'

Yes, Socrates, himself, is particularly missed,
A lovely little thinker,
But a bugger when he's pissed.
