Yes, he is interested. Unfortunately, his PM3 monitor stopped working last week, so C2 is sending him a new one, which should arrive shortly. His wife is also erging, maybe she'll join us too!

I won't be doing an all out effort on the 5K until the end of the month; I am just too busy building my aerobic base! This weekend, I'll do another L2 type of workout with a 5K at about 17:58. I doubt I can be much faster than 17:50 with the little amount of erging I have done since last December.

Good luck John in your next attempt!
I can not help but think that there must be some masochism involved in willingly putting oneself through such pain! :D

Cheers!

PS. I've just noticed that Dougie Lawson has passed you with a time of 18:22.8!

Dougie is a pretty tough customer. I often key off of his times as we seem to be pretty close on most distances. Now I've got extra reason to pull harder. I may try to increase my stroke rate slightly. I notices yours Francois was at 27 s/m. Mine was at 24 or so on my last attempt. Maybe I'll try 26. I'm still unsure of how I'm going to race it. I haven't had much luck with negative splits, but I'm considering going a little slower than my perceived pace for 500-1000 then going on a flat pace hopefully till the end at the pace I want. JohnnyBike has proposed doing either a 5k or 30 minute row on Rowpro on Saturday. Maybe it will go then. If others want to join the race, I'll let you know what time when it's decided. John.

Yes, Dougie's times are close to yours. You are slightly faster at almost all distances, so there is no reason why that shouldn't be the case for the 5K
Regarding stroke rates, 24 spm is low for a 5K. If I remember, your HM was done at that spm if not faster. In my case, the 5k is done at 2K spm - 2 or 3 strokes, and 1 or 2 spm faster than the 10K. By comparison, Dougie's 5K was done at 31 spm

I think your strategy for pacing is a good one. For instance, if your target pace is 1:50.0 (18:20 for the 5K), then you could do the first K at 1:51, then increase the pace to 1:50.0 for the next 3K and steadily increase your pace for the last K. You shouldn't have any problem going at 1:49 or faster in that last K (just pretend that your life depends on it!!). If you blast that last K in 1:45, it would mean that you had too much left in the tank! So the next time you would start a little faster.

I think I gain a bit from John in age, but lose a lot to John in height. We're not too far different in weight - John is a tall LWT. I don't know which distance to set the next marker for. I'd like to aim for a 6:55 2K at BIRC. I've got my entry in for the Evesham Golden Mile (1609m) - I'm aiming for under 5'30 for that.

I did it. 18:49.6. Quite happy about that (now that breathing isn't such a labor). Jim, I think I temporarily knocked you into Boat 2 but I'm sure you'll be returning the favor before long. I think I can guarantee you I won't be trying that again this month.
This is definitely a case of team dynamics. This was a PB for me. My previous best time was set in May '04 (18:57.8) amd each time since then that I convinced myself to give the 5K another shot, I wasn't willing to put in that kind of effort again. But this time, it meant more because it was for the good of the team. Okay, time for a shower.

Nicely done Dan. Nice to be pushed into the 2nd boat with a time like that. I will have to work hard to get into the Number One boat again.

Linda Linda needs some company back there in our number 3 boat. 4 more rowers will move up the standings. I am going to try and recruit some ringers for us for the C2C challenge.

The Eh!Team around the world boat has made it out of Iran and into Pakistan. http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/fac ... os/pk.html

We should pull into Karachi in a few days and then set off on our journey across India.

Keep on rowin', eh.

While looking at the Google Earth file, I noticed that Thomas Clayton just did a 5K. I don't know if everyone on the Eh! Team knows about this forum and the CTC. Tom might want to enter his time in the CTC and help us fill up another boat. It's starting to sound like 3 boats could be achievable this month.

Hi Dougie, good luck on reaching 6:55! I'd like to do that this year myself, possibly 6:50 by the end of the year, but one step at a time. You do know that you'd go faster if you joined the Eh Team. Rowing round the world makes you strong :D .

Dan, blazing fast 5k. You deserve the rest of the month off (from doing 5k's) with an effort like that! Well done!!!

Jim, good luck on the recruitment drive! I believe that Shannon has a friend that may be joinging us for the CTC soon too!

Francois, breaking 18:00 would be great! Good luck!

Well done Dan. Way to tough it out. It does seem to make a difference when you're trying to move the team's boat ahead. It gives you a bit of an edge in the arguement between your brain and your body.

I did 30min today, plus a warm-up & cool down. What was supposed to be an easy day was only easy compared to the 5K day. Good workout though.

Linda, see you soon in boat 3!

Cheers eh,

Great time, Dan! I thought we could count on you :D

I just saw that Daryl has joined the ctc too! :D Wow - well done! ... and maybe having three boats on the water isn't that far fetched???

I confess I have taken a few days off rowing. My right hand was still suffering from the marathon (I couldn't fully bend my middle finger, and it was swollen and hurting especially in the morning), and after having pushed my limits a little these past weeks I guess my body decided that I needed some rest. But I hope to join Shannon and the girls online tomorrow again.

Thanks everyone for the pats on the back. I guess I feel a little embarrassed with the attention.
Racking up CTC points AND 15,000,000 meters! AND a beer in Hand AND taking Friday off - does it get any better.

Brigitte, I never did a marathon, but I did have a time with some hand trouble (soreness and some stiffness in the fingers and outside edges of my hands) when I increased my distance.
I can share my experience for what it's worth.
I ended up buying some New Grips (http://www.newgrip.com/rowing.html). I can't say I'm a big fan of them and I don't still use them but they helped me get over the hump and I know they're available if problems flare up again. And I focused more on making sure I was keeping my fingers loose - I really already thought I was but I was extra vigilant. And I experimented with slightly different grips and with deliberately changing my grip just slightly while I was rowing (just for a little variety). And I also found that the grip I am most happy with is a grip where my pinky fingers are completely off the handle (I have a Model C straight handle - I'm not sure which one you have) - so that I'm not using my pinkies at all - which seemed to eliminate the soreness on the outside of the hands. But I still pull with the pinky fingers sometimes while I'm changing my grip a little.
I don't know if any of that helps - looking at various posts on the forum, it seems many people have had this kind of problem and found their own solution - or they have never had the problem and can't understand why others do and just figure they're doing something wrong. For myself, I can't really say that I knew I was doing something wrong before and I fixed it - all I can say is that I tried some things and the problem seems to be addressed.
Good luck.

Daryl, welcome to the CTC boat. We're helping row around the world 5k at a time this month.

Brian, you've done it again. Sub seventeen and a new PB, well done.

Cheers,
