How would you describe the 'image' of Concept2 in a short sentence?
I'm guessing by the question you have just had or you are about to have a strategy/planning session.
My line(s):
"C2 makes rowing better for everyone."
"Beginners to Olympic medalists can benefit from C2 products"
Good luck. Excellent company by the way. I love the whole package of the rowing machines, the online forums, the online tracking and the motivational incentives.
Keep on rowin', eh.

Great machine.c2bill wrote:How would you describe the 'image' of Concept2 in a short sentence?
One thing though, no matter what gym I come around you always seem to see the machine used in the wrong way. Maybe a better explanation how to use it would be handy. More people would use them in the gyms, hence more would be bought.
So, as far as people (employee's) go, outstanding. Helpful, friendly, just great. I was on site when I picked up my erg (left over from CRASHB), and everyone (esp KC Colt) was great.
Your committment to the sport is pretty amazing, for example:
- your spare parts pricing is pretty unheard of, most companies completely rip you off after the initial purchase.
- online helps, product manuals, technique, forum, honor board, super
As far as engineering goes, what can you say, how many model B's are still on the road? amazing... You should come out with a more retro looking Model D though, and I dont particularly like the blue, IMHO s/b black..
In short, quality engineering, great corporate ethos, the dominate presence in a niche sport.
That's the problem, it's a niche sport.. I remember years ago belonging to a gym that had a model B, I used it once, never again. I didnt know how to use it, I felt stupid, it made to much noise... People need to be educated on the erg so that they are comfortable with it.
How about a program where you put 5 erg's in a gym, and teach a daily class on how to use it? At the end of the 2 weeks have a Saturday regatta with Row Pro and let people get a taste.. Give the owner all that free for 2 weeks and see what kind of interest pops up.
In short, I would say that you have the product market presence, you have the engineering, you have the people, what erging doesnt have is mind share as an outstanding excercise vehicle (and competitive outlet) for people with limited time.

"Engineering company lacking in commercial development."
"Great product, great customer service, poor business development"
Okay, on the surface that might sound a tad harsh (I think so and I wrote it ) so let me explain.
The C2 Rowing Machine is a solid piece of engineering no question. C2 have a great product and that is reflected in their market share. Now maybe that's the problem. Has the company the drive to be better still. I suspect the roots of the company are based around engineering and physics as thats the elements of the product that are top notch. But I don't see C2 being very high profile in the marketing of their great product. Some might say they sell themselves and to a degree that may be true.
But I feel they could be better. I say this as someone who is passionate about the sport of indoor rowing and the C2 brand itself.
