Congratulations to all!

I haven't been on the erg since last Sunday. My 2 boys and household projects (and sleep) are taking precedent (as they should!)

I'll be giving the 5K a couple af goes. I may sneak up on it like Francois.

John, I know I don't have the best times on the list, but I find that pacing myself works for all distances. 90 seconds is a long time to hold on, especially if you give it all in the first 60. I saw some 1:20 somethings back in the 300m challenge, but they weren't on my fastest attempts. Just my opinion.

Waiting to try the 5K,
Cheers all!

Whoa!!! 1:27 at 49 s/m!!! No wonder the sun came out. Keep this up and I think you'll be taking the heat for global warming, eh?
At this point, I can't imagine hitting that mark.

Your opinion is great Kirk (and appreciated!!!) I think what nailed me on this is that I did a good long warm up and it seemed relatively easy till about the half way point and I told myself "ok, just 30 or so more pulls." But I'm pleased over all because it gives me the belief that I can improve this year (especially if I take your advice!) By the way, you probably know this already, but for the short events (up to 1k) I increase the drag factor by quite a bit. I usually row with a drag factor of 120, but I up it to 150 for the short ones.

Well done on the 6k Rob! Just think what a piece of cake the 5k will be now :P .

From the do as I say not as i do department,

I attempted a 5k this evening. I did a Wolverine type level 2 warm up and felt good. Went out at am ambitious pace that I was sure I could maintain.  (ROFL).

With 1250 m to go I had had enough and put the handle down. After I caught my breath I decided to complete the row. At least there is room for improvement before the end of the month!

Just reading your post and I can feel the pain you went through Kirk! Still, with having stopped, your time is good! I'm looking forward to seeing your next attempt when you hit the perfect pace :D .

Kirk,

IMO, the 5k is one of the hardest event since it is done at an intensity close to VO2 Max.
I only did one 5k time trial on the erg, and that was 2 years ago, five weeks after getting my erg. Quite frankly, it was a painful and traumatizing experience! That's why I need a couple weeks to be mentally ready to go through that again!

What you did was a good time considering that you stopped! Congratulations for having the courage to finish it!

In terms of pacing, I would suggest to start at your target pace +1 for the first K and increase your pace by 0.5 sec for each successive K. For instance, if your target pace is 1:57, I would do the first k in 1:58, the 2nd at 1:57.5, etc., and the last would be done at 1:56.

Good luck on your next attempt!

Gave the 5K a try this a.m.
Most of my training has been 10k's and 1hr at low stroke rates. Started slow and tried to lower avg/500 as I went. Final of 21:21.2 @ 23s/m and avg/500 of 2:08.1,
At the end my legs had some jump left but any rate above 20 is a challenge.

RC member is selling his Model C for $500.US. I can provide contact information if interested. Thought about selling mine after the 5K today. :)

Eh! Team
Keep your erg Chris, we need you!!! Although I've though how much less pain I'd have to endure if mine magically disappeared :D . As Francois said, it's a tough distance, but very well done! Chris, do you know about getting your name on to the CTC at c2ctc.com ? If you got in the boat it would knock my wife Shannon down into the next boat (she doesn't mind :) ) and our average would go up a lot! Plus, we'd be so much closer to having our second boat filled! Once again Chris, excellent job!!!

Francois, Thanks for the advice for pacing. That will leave something in the tank for the final push to end.

Chris, way t' go! Get that time posted, the more the merrier. As john mentioned, all you have to do is sign up! http://www.c2forum.com/viewtopic.php?p=64184#64184

O.K. I posted my time in the CTC.

Shannon- Sorry to send you to the second boat but I'm sure I'll soon be with you. Blame it on John and Kirk, they made me do it. :)

Thanks John, I will be giving the 5K a try later this week.

It's been an up and down week. I ran a half marathon last Sunday in Calgary in strong winds with snow whipping off the resevoir (it was 22c and sunny the day before) and finished in 1h 34m nearly 5 mins slower than my previous run. I also injured my achilles which effectively puts my attempt to qualify for Boston off for a while.

But hey-ho, fortunately I have the C2 as an excellent cross-trainer. So, after the 6K earlier in the week I had a crack at a 10K today.

And I really suprised myself by recording a time of 39m53s, which is a PB by 25s :)
Male - 43 yrs, Wt - 150 lbs

1K - 3:44.2, 2K - 7:15.7, 5K - 19:24.5,
6K - 23:47, 30 mins - 7530m, 10K - 39:53,
HM - 1:29:15

Congratulations Rob! Nice improvement!
It seems that your running has helped your erging, and vice-versa.

I hope you'll soon recover from your injuries. Achilles sometimes take a while to heal.

You are right, the C2 is an excellent cross-trainer. Now that you have done the 6K and the 10K, you are well prepared to have a crack at the 5k!

All the best!

Chris, no worries about knocking me into the second boat! It is all about the team getting the most points possible! I lasted 6 days in the first boat. Of course, I could get back in there if I could just beat Brigitte, but that seems unlikely. She is pretty speedy! I rowed online with Brigitte on Friday and she just about killed me!! We've got another row planned for Monday, a 5K, so maybe we can both shave some seconds off our 5Ks for the CTC.

Shannon-Thanks-Good luck with your 5k on Monday. Rowing online with a teammate sounds like a great way to improve and motivate each other.

I think I can improve my 5k time as well. My first 1k was in 2:13.3 and the 2nd in 2:11.6 both at 23s/m. I would be pleased with a 2:05 avg. for my next try in a couple weeks. How the heck do YJ and ulu do a 5k that beats my 2k?
