You've got more power per stroke, and likely a much broader and deeper aerobic base. Now, when stressed, you can up the rate, to up the pace, when sprinting at the end of the race. It's a great improvement, and you'll benefit from it significantly!

Team Oarsome Challenge:

Set out to paddle through a 1k in 3:06, realized partway through that I felt pretty good...

That's 3:00.4, a new PB (verified), and to my knowledge, .5 off the WR. I think it's the 3d fastest 1k for 50s HWs ever done, and I wasn't trying to go that fast.... Especially after doing the 300m Challenge earlier in the day in 45.6 (1:16 pace r53) ....

My time in Saturday’s C-B race was just an embarrassment, but, on the Wednesday before, Xeno’s program called for a 1k. I did that and ended up with 3:56.9, an all time personal best. I checked back through the records through 1999 and couldn’t find any faster 80+ lwt times, so I think that it is a WR. I did find a hwt time of 3:55.2, done by Don Alden in 2003, so I missed that by 1.7 seconds.

Since I had a 280 mile drive on Tuesday and a transcontinental redeye flight Tuesday night, I wasn’t expecting much from that workout, so it came as a pleasant surprise. I have no excuses for the sub-par performance on Saturday. It might have helped to have a cox to snap me out of the mental stagnation, but who knows?

Bob S.
