This was a fun one yesterday: designed as a UT1 session with intended power to be 90% of target 2k pace.

I'd probably say that 85% of me didn't want to do this, but sometimes you've got to take your medicine. I was full of excuses until about 11:30 when I dragged myself on.

The 30 mins warmup felt very sluggish until the last five minutes when it started to loosen up. The four minutes felt quite a bit easier than I expected, but the last 300m of the last interval was horrible and there was a big fade from circa 1:38.5 pace.

This is probably as good as I could have hoped for atm, but I'm slowly clawing my way back to form. I had to lie on the floor afterwards, which is something, I'd guess, is about two years since I last had to do that. I took off my HRM as I didn't want to see it, not that it puts me off, but i just didn't want anything to even slightly derail me.
Great effort Stu. Looks like you gave this one your all.

I stupidly decided to try and do a 30k which with hindsight wasn't a good idea after yesterday's session, especially at this pace.

It was going quite well, until it suddenly wasn't. I felt really thirsty and hungry and it all just dropped off a cliff. I was drenched in sweat, so the dehydration definitely didn't help.

Before this season ended I wanted to test my 2k again to see where I am. Goal was to beat my latest time from 1st of April, secret goal to go under 8:40.0. Well, I crushed both. It‘s time to believe in myself just a little bit more :D

Time Meters Pace Watts Cal/Hr S/M
8:36.7 2,000 2:09.1 162 858 27 181

2:05.9 2,000 2:05.9 175 903 28 185

This was the 2025 seasons 2k:

27.04.25 2000m 8:36.7
01.04.25 2000m 8:46.7
21.02.25 2000m 8:50.3
03.11.24 2000m 8:44.1
18.06.24 2000m 8:33.9

I‘m proud to be back on my fitness level of last summer. I want to chase my biggest goal: The sub8 2k. I hope achieve this before turning 40 in March 2028. Maybe I‘ll reach it a little bit earlier
I‘m working on it. Can‘t wait to start the 2026 season.

I mean, this is still a good solid distance piece! Good effort yesterday, sounds like you left everything on the Erg, can't ask for much more than that!

My second piece on Friday was wearing my new shorts, just a pair of bag standard compression shorts and without going in to detail, the piece left me with a sore spot. Just a 6k session after the gym yesterday was unpleasant, just left me really tending up. I'm hoping it's a case of skin toughening up a bit was my calluses and blisters have healed up fine and not returned (yet), despite temperature in the garage picking up. Watching the marathon now might inspire me to a run later.

I'm not sure if you'll achieve it, as it is quite a big target from your current form, but you've got to give it all you've got to see if it's possible.

The last 500m is a great indication of what you're capable of, so keep doing what you're doing, build up your confidence and stay consistent with your training and we'll see a sub 8:30 2k in the near future.

Regardless of what happens Julia, you should be really proud with how you've got to this stage after your shoulder issue.

Thanks Alex, I think it was all I had on the day, but I'm hoping to get it down to low 1:39s with a bit more training and courage. The last three minutes should have been faster than the first three mins, so that tells me something.

I've never bothered with compression shorts, but I still get blisters on my hands if I do longer distances (I get very sweaty, all too easily and nothing seems to keep them under control)

Yep, but I've got lots of form on being far too optimistic!! I struggled to get out of bed at 6am yesterday, but I struggled to stay in bed until 5am this morning, so I figured I was good to go. Looking at my old 30k results from 2020/21 on ErgZone also didn't help control my optimistic mood.

This is dangerous territory  in my last hurrah to get in to competitive running shape, I wish I didn't have access to my previous times and race placings etc. It was an ego thing that I couldn't let go of. My perspective on these things nowadays is much healthier.

Presumably 20/21 was your FM+ pb season?

Yes mate, and I really wish I hadn't expanded the results. I was probably aiming for 2:00 or just under, but when you get going, as you say, it's really difficult to let go of it.

I'm generally able to control it, but sometimes it can get the better of me, and I think my CTC being better than I expected has slowly seeped into my ego, and then waking up feeling quite fresh just added to the hubris

Thx guys, I know it's a long haul. But it's a big dream. Getting into this form within two and a half months from nearly zero training in December and January compared to a 4-month 10k training plan last year I believe it's possible with consistency and a long breath. Plus I'm totally happy that my shoulder is soo much better compared to January. I'll see where this journey takes me.

Front squats, good mornings and changed exercises for my strength training plan. Improving a few reps a session. Thx Stu for the advice! Hopefully it translates to rowing…

Somehow, 20kg * 15 front squat even though my previous back squat PB is 100kg. I suppose I have weak spots to train…

A small step forward is still a step forward

Team challenge for the month. Couldn't have paced it better, the pace dropped to 1:35 just as I crossed the line and there would have been no salvaging it.
