Winter Bike To Work Day and Valentine's Day....this was a colorful event! 2000 riders throughout the area - cold too. Lots of breakfast stations, warming stations...and the afternoon riders had different beverages!

Bunny Trails of the Mind....it's been awhile...

Bunny trails....going down the rabbit hole...these are things that happen when I start digging for background on something I want to highlight here. In this instance, it was all about preparing for winter night sky viewing. Most of the list was pretty obvious. Wear layers. Take advantage of winter conditions. Find a dark location. It was the "Adjust your eyes to the dark" set of tips that sent me down a new path.

Adjust your eyes to the dark
Use a red-light flashlight or turn on the red light setting on your phone - WAIT. WHAT? We have a red light setting on our phones?! You know you're going to look up how to do this.
Twenty minutes before viewing, avoid looking at bright screens like your computer or TV

What do we want to see? Grand Planetary Alignments, where all 7 of the "official" planets (alas poor Pluto) seemingly are lined up in the skies, don't happen all that often. It's been 15 years since it last occurred on the "grand" scale. Starting on February 20 and going to February 28th, you'll have the opportunity to see the alignment just after sunset assuming all sky parameters are in spec. Night skies in winter provide for better (clearer) viewing opportunities - less humidity = clearer skies (except when you've got a snowstorm sitting on top of your viewing spot).
