New PM5 showing wrong data

Post by Kelevra_mk » January 19th, 2025, 5:51 pm

Hey everyone,
I have recently updated my parents‘ Model C with a new chain, chord, idler pulleys and a PM5. I also had to change the old sensor for a new one.

So far so good, everything works smoothly. The onlynproblem I have is that my sensor doesn‘t measure correctly. I also row at a local rowing club and during winter times we do our training on ergometers so I know what my pace should be like. My ergometer claims I‘m 20 seconds per 500m faster than I usually am - would be cool, but no. The data is also instable, so one seconds I am rowing at 2:23 and the next stroke is St. 1:49, which I am not capable of . The drag factor also jumps (e.g. from 135 to suddenly 42)

I have set the new PM5 to Model C in the settings, updated the firmware, played with the air circulation and the Drag Factor etc. is there anything else I could do? Has anyone experienced this before?

Is it set to the correct model?
Check the front page screens.

If you have a model C rower with a PM5 set for Model D/E you will get wrong results.

Then you probably need a new flywheel sensor or new magnets on the flywheel.

Thank for your tip!

I'll first try checking the magnets. I found the following pic about the parts of the Model C flywheel but I'm not sure where the magnets are supposed to be: https://cms.concept2.com/sites/default/ ... ematic.pdf

Does anyone know?

Also verify your cable is fully plugged in. Reseat it.

Then have someone wiggle the cable while you row and see if you can duplicate the problem. Damaged cable would explain the intermittent jumps.

Finally, you still have all your old parts. There is not much in the loop from rowing to splits. Just the sensor, the cable and the pm5. You can play "swap the part" until you find it. Or discover it fails the same way with old parts so probably something got damaged in the swap like magnets.

Good Luck

The old sensor wouldn’t work at all when I got the erg so I already replaced it when I worked on the chain and the chord.

But I’ve found the magnets! One is pretty rusty, so I hope cleaning will do the job. Any clue on how I replace them if cleaning doesn‘t help? Is there a trick on how to get them out?

Search the forum posts for "magnets" - this topic has come up before.
